Luxury Nepal Tour 10 Days: tour overview

Nepal without the compromises of a group tour. Ten days is enough to see the Kathmandu Valley's three royal cities properly, to wake up to the Annapurnas from Sarangkot, and to spend two nights on the edge of Chitwan National Park.

You have a private vehicle and driver for the whole trip, with fuel, tolls, road taxes, parking and route permits paid. Nepal's roads are slow and the days between towns are long — having your own car means you stop where you want and arrive when you arrive, rather than being counted onto a bus.

Hotels, meals, park fees and guides are not in this price. We can book any of them for you, at heritage and boutique level if that is what you want, and we will say honestly which ones are worth it.

Our other Nepal routes — the Kathmandu valley, Pokhara, Chitwan and Mustang — are on the Nepal tours page. If you want to cross the border and see both countries in one trip, that is the India and Nepal page.

DAG01Dag 01

Arrive in Kathmandu (1,400 m)

Met at Tribhuvan International Airport with a name sign and driven to a heritage hotel in the old city.

  • Arrival: Nepal visa on arrival for most nationalities (or apply online beforehand). The airport is 20–40 minutes from Thamel or the old city.
  • Evening: A first walk through Thamel or Durbar Marg, and dinner of dal bhat or momos.
  • Tip: Get Nepali rupees from an ATM in Thamel; cards are not accepted everywhere.
  • Overnight: Kathmandu
DAG02Dag 02

Kathmandu · Swayambhunath, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath

The three great shrines of the valley with a licensed guide, at an unhurried pace.

  • 9:00 a.m.: Swayambhunath, the 'monkey temple' stupa on a hill over the city, about 1½ hours.
  • 11:00 a.m.: Kathmandu Durbar Square: the old royal palace, Kumari Ghar, home of the living goddess.
  • 2:30 p.m.: Pashupatinath, Nepal's holiest Hindu temple, on the Bagmati river (non-Hindus watch from the far bank).
  • 4:30 p.m.: Boudhanath, one of the largest stupas in the world, for the evening kora with Tibetan pilgrims, and butter tea on a rooftop.
  • Tickets: Kathmandu valley heritage sites each charge foreign visitors an entry fee, from about NPR 200 at Swayambhunath to about NPR 1,000–1,800 at Pashupatinath and the Durbar Squares.
  • Tip: Cremations take place at Pashupatinath; watch respectfully and do not photograph mourners closely.
  • Overnight: Kathmandu
DAG03Dag 03

Everest mountain flight, Patan and Bhaktapur

Everest at sunrise from the air, then the two other royal cities of the valley.

  • 6:30 a.m.: Mountain flight, about 1 hour along the Himalaya: Gauri Shankar, Cho Oyu and Everest. Every passenger gets a window seat and a visit to the cockpit.
  • Morning: Patan Durbar Square and its museum, the finest in Nepal, and the Golden Temple (Hiranya Varna Mahavihar).
  • Afternoon: Bhaktapur: Durbar Square, the five-storey Nyatapola temple and the potters' square. Try juju dhau, the 'king of curds'.
  • Tickets: Kathmandu valley heritage sites each charge foreign visitors an entry fee, from about NPR 200 at Swayambhunath to about NPR 1,000–1,800 at Pashupatinath and the Durbar Squares.
  • Tip: Mountain flights are cancelled in poor weather and refunded or moved to the next day.
  • Overnight: Kathmandu
DAG04Dag 04

Kathmandu to Pokhara · Phewa Lake

West to Nepal's lake city, with the Annapurna range above it.

  • Travel: A 25-minute flight (morning) or about 200 km by road, 6–7 hours along the Trishuli river.
  • Afternoon: Rowing boat on Phewa Lake to the Tal Barahi island temple.
  • Evening: Lakeside for dinner.
  • Tip: Sit on the right side of the plane from Kathmandu for the mountain views.
  • Overnight: Pokhara (820 m)
DAG05Dag 05

Pokhara · Sarangkot sunrise and the lake

The Annapurna range at sunrise, then the sights around the lake.

  • 5:30 a.m.: Drive up to Sarangkot (1,600 m), 30 minutes, for sunrise on Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail).
  • Morning: The World Peace Pagoda on the ridge across the lake.
  • Afternoon: Devi's Fall, Gupteshwor Mahadev cave and the International Mountain Museum.
  • Optional: Paragliding from Sarangkot (about 30 minutes in the air), the best in Nepal.
  • Tickets: Small entry fees at the falls, cave and museum.
  • Tip: Mountains are clearest from October to April; in the monsoon they hide in cloud.
  • Overnight: Pokhara
DAG06Dag 06

Pokhara to Chitwan

Down from the hills to the jungles of the Terai.

  • Drive: Pokhara to Chitwan (Sauraha) is about 160 km, 5 hours.
  • Afternoon: Check in to your lodge on the park boundary; sunset walk by the Rapti river.
  • Overnight: Chitwan
DAY07Day 07

Chitwan National Park · jeep safari and canoe

Nepal's best wildlife park: one-horned rhinoceros, gharial and mugger crocodiles, sloth bears and, with luck, a tiger.

  • Early morning: Canoe down the Rapti river at dawn, watching kingfishers and crocodiles on the banks, then a short jungle walk with two naturalists.
  • Afternoon: Jeep safari deep into the park (about 4 hours), past grasslands where rhinos graze.
  • Evening: Tharu cultural show, with the stick dance of the indigenous people of the Terai.
  • Tickets: The park permit (per person per day) and safaris are booked through your lodge.
  • Tip: Wear neutral colours and bring insect repellent.
  • Overnight: Chitwan (Sauraha)
DAY08Day 08

Chitwan · a second day in the park

More time in the jungle means much better chances of rhino, sloth bear and the rare tiger.

  • Morning: Bird walk or a longer guided jungle walk (more than 500 bird species are recorded here).
  • Afternoon: The elephant breeding centre and gharial breeding centre, then a Tharu village by bicycle.
  • Sunset: Drinks on the Rapti river bank.
  • Overnight: Chitwan
DAY09Day 09

Chitwan to Kathmandu

Back to the valley.

  • Travel: A 20-minute flight from Bharatpur airport, or about 160 km by road, 5–6 hours.
  • Afternoon: Shopping in Thamel or Patan for thangka paintings, pashmina and singing bowls.
  • Evening: Farewell Nepali dinner with cultural dance.
  • Overnight: Kathmandu
DAG10Dag 10

Private transfer to Tribhuvan airport.

  • Drop: Allow 3 hours before an international flight; the airport is 20–40 minutes from most hotels.
  • Overnight: Your onward flight

Luxury Nepal Tour 10 Days: frequently asked questions

Echte vragen die onze reizigers stellen voordat ze boeken, beantwoord door de familie die deze routes rijdt.

The vehicle, the pace and the flexibility — the things we actually control. A newer, larger, more comfortable car, a senior driver, no rushed days, airport meet-and-greet, and an itinerary that runs to your timings. We do not include hotels on any road tour, so the standard of your accommodation is yours to set.

Because that is the honest description of what we provide. Nepal has some genuinely excellent hotels and we would rather you booked the one you want than paid us a markup to book it for you. Tell us your budget and we will book at the price we are quoted, adding nothing.

Yes. The Everest scenic flight from Kathmandu is an hour and is booked separately; helicopter trips to Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp can be arranged too. Both are weather-dependent and both are quoted at cost. Just ask.

No. On our Nepal road tours the price covers the vehicle, the driver, fuel, tolls and road taxes, parking and permits. Kathmandu, Pokhara and Sauraha all have accommodation from very cheap to genuinely luxurious, and we take no commission on rooms — so you choose. We will book on your behalf at cost if you prefer.

Kathmandu to Pokhara is around six to seven hours on a road that is scenic but slow and often busy with trucks. Pokhara to Chitwan is about five hours. These are honest figures; anyone quoting you four hours to Pokhara has not driven it recently.

Kathmandu to Pokhara takes twenty-five minutes by air and there are several flights daily. Many travellers fly one way and drive the other, which we think is a sensible compromise. We will meet you at either airport and price it either way.

From Pokhara, on a clear morning, Machhapuchhre and the Annapurnas sit right above the lake and it is remarkable. In haze you will see very little. October to December gives the clearest air; Sarangkot at dawn is the classic viewpoint and we will drive you up for it.

October and November are the clearest and busiest. March to May is warm with rhododendron in flower and more haze. The monsoon from June to September brings cloud and landslide risk on the mountain roads. December to February is cold and clear at altitude but fine in Chitwan and Pokhara.

Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport or at the land borders — 15, 30 or 90 day options, paid in cash or card. Bring a passport photo to save time. Visa cost is never included in our prices.
