Shimla and Manali are the two hill stations most Indians go to, and there is a reason. Shimla was the British summer capital and still looks it — a ridge of colonial buildings, a pedestrian mall and deodar forest. Manali sits at the head of the Kullu valley with real mountains behind it.
The drive between them runs through the apple country of Kullu along the Beas river, and it is one of the better road days in north India.
We drive everything, including the climb to Solang and, when the pass is open and you want it, Rohtang. Hotels are yours to book — Himachal has everything from very cheap to genuinely luxurious.
Our other north India routes — Punjab, Himachal and the Uttarakhand hills — are on the India tours page, and what a car and driver actually costs is set out on private car and driver in India.

Shimla · Mall Road, Jakhoo and the Viceregal Lodge
Colonial architecture, forest walks and the best views in town.

11:00 a.m.: The Viceregal Lodge (1888), where the decision to partition India was discussed; guided tours of about 45 minutes.
Afternoon: The Mall, Christ Church, the Gaiety Theatre and Lakkar Bazaar for wooden crafts.
Optional: Kufri (16 km) for views and pony rides, or the quieter Mashobra forest.

Shimla and Manali Tour: frequently asked questions
Echte vragen die onze reizigers stellen voordat ze boeken, beantwoord door de familie die deze routes rijdt.
No. It usually opens around May and closes with the first heavy snow, often in October or November. Entry is capped by permit and there is a daily quota, and it can close at short notice for weather. We apply for the permit for you, but nobody can promise the pass.
They are winding and in places narrow, and the Shimla and Manali approaches both climb steadily. Our drivers work these roads constantly. If you are prone to motion sickness, take something before we start climbing rather than after.
In Shimla and Manali town, roughly late December through February. Higher up at Solang and Rohtang, much longer. If snow is the point of your trip, tell us your dates and we will tell you honestly what is likely.
No. Our tours cover the vehicle, driver, fuel, tolls, taxes, parking and permits. Himachal hotels range enormously in price and you should pick your own. We will book for you at cost if you prefer.
Yes, comfortably — two nights Shimla, three Manali, and the driving days in between. Six days is possible but you would arrive and leave in a rush. Ten would let us add Dharamshala or the Tirthan valley.
We do, but those are separate high-altitude routes with their own permits, acclimatisation days and seasons, and they are not something to bolt onto this trip. Ask us and we will plan one properly.
Warm layers even in summer — evenings in Manali are cold year-round and Rohtang is snowbound most of the year. Proper shoes if you plan to walk at Solang or above Vashisht.
