Upper Mustang jeeptour 10 dagen — Lo Manthang over de weg

Met at Tribhuvan International Airport with a name sign and driven to your hotel.

• Arrival: Nepal visa on arrival for most nationalities (or apply online beforehand). The airport is 20–40 minutes from Thamel or the old city.
• Evening: A first walk through Thamel or Durbar Marg, and dinner of dal bhat or momos.
• Tip: Get Nepali rupees from an ATM in Thamel; cards are not accepted everywhere.
• Overnight: Kathmandu

West to Nepal's lake city, with the Annapurna range above it.

• Travel: A 25-minute flight (morning) or about 200 km by road, 6–7 hours along the Trishuli river.
• Afternoon: Rowing boat on Phewa Lake to the Tal Barahi island temple.
• Evening: Lakeside for dinner.
• Tip: Sit on the right side of the plane from Kathmandu for the mountain views.
• Overnight: Pokhara (820 m)

A short, spectacular flight through the world's deepest gorge, between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna.

• Early morning: The 20-minute flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. Flights go only in the morning, before the strong valley wind rises.
• Afternoon: Jeep up the Kali Gandaki to Kagbeni (about 1 hour), a medieval village of mud-brick houses and a red monastery at the gate of Upper Mustang.
• Permits: Upper Mustang is a restricted area. Foreign visitors need a special permit (USD 500 per person for the first 10 days) plus the Annapurna Conservation Area permit, and must travel with a licensed guide through a registered agency. We arrange both.
• Tip: Weather can delay Jomsom flights; we keep a buffer day in mind and can drive instead (about 8 hours).
• Overnight: Kagbeni

Permit check, then into the forbidden kingdom.

• Morning: Permits checked at the Upper Mustang gate in Kagbeni.
• Drive: North up the Kali Gandaki on a rough jeep track, about 2–3 hours, with stops to walk through Tangbe's whitewashed lanes and apple orchards.
• Afternoon: Short walk to the cliff caves and the red rock pillars around Chhuksang.
• Overnight: Chhuksang, simple lodge

Over high passes with views back to the Annapurnas and Nilgiri.

• Drive: About 5 hours with stops, via Chele, Samar and Syangboche.
• Stops: The Ranchung cave monastery, eroded canyons and the high Nyi La pass (about 4,000 m).
• Overnight: Ghami

The final stretch to the walled city.

• Morning: The longest mani wall in Mustang below Ghami's red cliffs, then Tsarang village with its fortress and monastery.
• Drive: About 3–4 hours with stops, over the Lo La pass with the first view of Lo Manthang on the plain.
• Afternoon: A first walk inside the walls.
• Overnight: Lo Manthang

A full day in the capital of the old kingdom of Lo.

• Morning: The 15th-century Jampa and Thubchen monasteries, with some of the finest murals in the Himalaya, and Chodey monastery.
• Afternoon: Drive to Chhoser to see the sky caves dug into the cliffs, and Garphu and Nyiphu cave monasteries.
• Tickets: Small donations or entry fees at each monastery.
• Tip: In May, the three-day Tiji festival fills Lo Manthang with masked dances. Ask us for dates.
• Overnight: Lo Manthang

The western route back past the oldest monastery in Mustang.

• Drive: About 4 hours with stops.
• Stops: Ghar Gompa (Lo Gekar), said to date from the 8th century, and the red cliffs of Drakmar.
• Overnight: Drakmar

Down the Kali Gandaki.

• Drive: About 6–7 hours on the jeep track.
• Evening: Jomsom, with a hot shower and an apple brandy from Marpha.
• Overnight: Jomsom

Out of the mountains.

• Morning: Flight to Pokhara (20 minutes), then a connecting flight or drive to Kathmandu.
• Overnight: Kathmandu, or Pokhara if you prefer
