Everest

The Everest region, properly the Khumbu, is the most famous trekking country on earth. We run it as a teahouse trek from Lukla, and we will be straight with you about what it involves.

How you get in

Almost everyone flies Kathmandu to Lukla, a twenty-five minute flight onto a short runway on a mountainside. Flights are weather-dependent and delays of a day are normal in the shoulder seasons. The return flight costs roughly USD 440 and is an add-on to our trek price, not included, because we would rather quote it honestly than bury it.

The route

Lukla to Namche Bazaar at 3,440 metres, the Sherpa capital, where you stop a day to acclimatise. Then Tengboche and its monastery, Dingboche for a second acclimatisation day, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep. From there, Everest Base Camp at 5,364 metres and the climb to Kala Patthar at 5,545 metres, which is where the photograph of Everest itself is taken. Base camp does not have the view; Kala Patthar does.

What it actually asks of you

Fourteen days, five to seven hours of walking most days, and altitude that is genuinely serious above Dingboche. You do not need climbing experience. You do need to be fit enough to walk uphill for a week and sensible enough to turn back if altitude sickness starts. Our guides are trained to make that call and they will make it.

You sleep in teahouses, not tents. Hot showers and charging cost extra above Namche. Wifi exists and is slow.

What our price includes

Guide, porter, permits, teahouse accommodation and three meals a day on trek. Excluded: the Lukla flights, Kathmandu hotels, travel insurance with helicopter evacuation cover, tips, hot showers and charging.

Wann Sie kommen sollten

October and November for the clearest skies, then March to May. December and January are clear but brutally cold. Monsoon, June to September, is not recommended here.

Flights from Manthali in the busy season

In the peak spring and autumn months, many Lukla flights leave from Manthali airport in Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu, to ease the traffic at Kathmandu airport. Manthali is about four to five hours by road, so the drive usually starts around 1 or 2 a.m. to make the first flights. We drive you there in your own car and collect you again when you fly back, so you are not left arranging a night bus or a shared jeep.

A typical 14-day plan

  • Day 1: Fly to Lukla, walk to Phakding.
  • Days 2–3: Climb to Namche Bazaar, then a rest day with a short hike to the Everest View point.
  • Days 4–6: Tengboche monastery, Dingboche, and a second rest day.
  • Days 7–9: Lobuche, Gorak Shep and Base Camp, then Kala Patthar at sunrise.
  • Days 10–13: The walk back down through Pheriche and Namche to Lukla.
  • Day 14: Fly out, with a spare day kept in case weather stops the flights.

Seeing Everest without trekking

If two weeks on foot is not for you, there are two other ways. A one-hour mountain flight leaves Kathmandu at sunrise and flies along the Himalaya; in clear weather you see Everest from your window. A helicopter tour flies to Kala Patthar or a hotel near Namche for breakfast with the view, and is back in Kathmandu by late morning.

More questions people ask

What happens if the Lukla flight is cancelled?

Flights are simply moved to the next clear morning. This is why we keep a spare day at the end. If the weather stays bad, a shared helicopter is the usual way out, at extra cost.

Can we combine Everest with a tour of India or the rest of Nepal?

Yes. Many guests trek first and then drive to Pokhara and Chitwan, or cross into India for the Golden Triangle. See our India and Nepal tours.
