A good India Nepal tour itinerary fits two very different countries into two weeks without turning the trip into a race between airports.
Most plans we’re sent try to do too much. Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Varanasi, Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and a trek, all in fourteen days, with a border crossing in the middle and no allowance for fog in the Ganges plain or a landslide on a Nepali hill road.
Fourteen days is enough for a wonderful trip across both countries. It just needs a clear line on the map: one direction, few backtracks, and a sensible choice between crossing the border by road or flying over it.
So instead of asking only “How do I fit India and Nepal into two weeks?”, it helps to ask a better question:
Which route links the places I most want to see in India and Nepal in one direction, with the border crossing and the long drives in the right places?
That’s what this guide is built around. It gives you two tested 14-day India Nepal tour itineraries, day by day: an overland route from Delhi through Agra, Varanasi and the Sunauli border to Lumbini, Pokhara, Chitwan and Kathmandu, and a fly-in route that pairs the Golden Triangle with Nepal. It also covers the 2026–27 border rules, visas, the best months, drive times and our prices.
Two weeks is the shortest India Nepal tour itinerary in which both countries feel like more than a checklist. Anything less and you’re choosing between the Taj Mahal and the Himalaya. Anything more, and you can add Rajasthan, Khajuraho or a trek.
Here’s how the days usually divide in a 14-day India Nepal tour itinerary:
| Where | Tage | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | 1–2 | Arrival, jet lag, Old and New Delhi |
| Agra | 1–2 | The Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort, Mehtab Bagh |
| Varanasi or Jaipur | 2 | The ghats of the Ganges, or the Pink City |
| Lumbini or Bandipur | 1 | The Buddha’s birthplace, or a car-free hill town |
| Pokhara | 2 | Phewa Lake and the Annapurna view |
| Chitwan | 2 | Rhinos, jungle and the Rapti river |
| Kathmandutal | 2–3 | Temple squares, stupas, Bhaktapur |
The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so plan Agra around that. And remember Nepal’s clocks run 15 minutes ahead of India’s, which surprises people the first morning after the border.
Every India Nepal tour itinerary comes down to one choice: do you cross the border by road, or fly between Delhi and Kathmandu?

| Route A: overland via Sunauli | Route B: Golden Triangle + fly | |
|---|---|---|
| Indien | Delhi, Agra, Lucknow, Varanasi and Sarnath | Delhi, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Jaipur |
| Nepal | Lumbini, Pokhara, Chitwan, Kathmandu | Kathmandu, Bandipur, Pokhara, Chitwan |
| Crossing | By car at Sunauli–Belahiya | Flight Delhi–Kathmandu, about 1 h 40 m |
| Driving | Heavier; several 5–7 hour days | Lighter; one flight replaces two long days |
| Best for | Pilgrims, Buddhism, slow travellers who like the road | First-timers, families, anyone short of energy |
Route A is the richer journey. It follows the Buddha’s life from Sarnath, where he first taught, to Lumbini, where he was born, and you watch the landscape change from the Gangetic plain to the hills. Route B is easier and fits more comfortably into two weeks.
Both versions of this India Nepal tour itinerary work in reverse, and both are fully private with your own car and driver in each country.
Route A is the overland India Nepal tour itinerary, and it starts where most flights land.
Day 1: arrive in Delhi. Rest, then an easy evening walk at India Gate or dinner in the city.
Day 2: Delhi, then drive to Agra. A morning in Old Delhi, the Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk by cycle-rickshaw, and Humayun’s Tomb. After lunch, drive about 230 km to Agra on the Yamuna Expressway, 3 to 4 hours. Watch the sun set behind the Taj from Mehtab Bagh across the river.
Day 3: the Taj Mahal at sunrise. Go at opening time, when it’s quietest. Foreigners pay ₹1,100 plus ₹200 for the main mausoleum. Then Agra Fort, and the afternoon drive towards Lucknow on the Agra–Lucknow Expressway, about 335 km and 4 to 5 hours.
If you’d rather keep the drive short, sleep in Agra and read our Delhi to Agra by car guide for timing. For the full Golden Triangle version, see our Golden Triangle guide.
Day 4: Lucknow to Varanasi. A morning in Lucknow for the Bara Imambara and the city’s famous kebabs, then about 300 km to Varanasi, 5 to 6 hours. Walk down to Dashashwamedh Ghat for the evening Ganga aarti, when priests perform the fire ritual at dusk.

Day 5: Varanasi. A dawn boat ride along the ghats is the single most memorable hour on any India Nepal tour itinerary. Later, walk the lanes to the Kashi Vishwanath corridor and in the afternoon drive 10 km to Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon.
Sarnath became India’s newest UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2026, according to UNESCO, which gives this India Nepal tour itinerary a new highlight.
Day 6: Varanasi to Gorakhpur. About 200 km and 5 to 6 hours across the plain. With an early start you can detour to Kushinagar, where the Buddha died, about 50 km east of Gorakhpur. It makes the Buddhist thread of this route complete.
For more on these holy cities, read our India and Nepal pilgrimage guide.
Day 7: Gorakhpur to Sunauli and Lumbini. The drive to the border at Sunauli is roughly 90 km, 2 to 3 hours. Border formalities take anything from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on queues. Lumbini is then about 30 km on the Nepali side.
In the afternoon, visit the Maya Devi Temple, the sacred pond and the Ashoka Pillar. The Lumbini Development Trust charges foreigners NPR 700 a day and Indian nationals NPR 80.
Day 8: Lumbini to Pokhara. An early bicycle or e-rickshaw ride round the monastic zone, then about 190 km north on the Siddhartha Highway through the hills, 6 to 7 hours with a lunch stop at the old hill town of Tansen.
This is the longest and most scenic road day of the whole India Nepal tour itinerary. It climbs from the flat Terai into terraced middle hills, and it’s slow, so don’t plan anything for the evening except dinner by the lake.
Day 9: Pokhara. Sunrise at Sarangkot for the Annapurna range, a boat on Phewa Lake to the Tal Barahi island temple, and sunset from the World Peace Pagoda. Paragliding is best booked for the morning, when the air is calm.

See our Pokhara travel guide for more, including short walks if you have the energy for one.
Day 10: Pokhara to Chitwan. About 150 km, 4 to 5 hours, down the Trishuli and Narayani valleys to Sauraha. In the late afternoon, a walk to the river for sunset.
Day 11: Chitwan National Park. A jeep safari for one-horned rhino, deer, crocodiles and birds, and a canoe on the Rapti river. The park fee for foreigners is NPR 2,000 per day. We don’t recommend elephant rides; the jeep and canoe are better for seeing wildlife anyway.
Day 12: Chitwan to Kathmandu. About 165 km, 5 to 6 hours. Arrive in time for the evening aarti at Pashupatinath (non-Hindus watch from the far bank) and a walk round Boudhanath at dusk.
Day 13: Bhaktapur and Patan. Bhaktapur in the morning, when it’s quiet, then Patan’s Durbar Square and museum in the afternoon.
Day 14: Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath and departure. Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan airport has direct flights to Delhi and on to the Gulf and South-East Asia, so this India Nepal tour itinerary can end in Nepal without returning to India.
| Kathmandu site | Foreigner entry |
|---|---|
| Kathmandu Durbar Square | NPR 1,000 |
| Bhaktapur | USD 15 or NPR 2,000 |
| Patan Durbar Square | NPR 1,000 |
| Pashupatinath | NPR 1,000 |
| Boudhanath | NPR 400 |
| Swayambhunath | NPR 200 |

This version of the India Nepal tour itinerary swaps the long overland days for a one-hour-forty flight. It’s the one we recommend to most first-time visitors and families.

| Day | Plan | Overnight |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ankunft in Delhi | Delhi |
| 2 | Old and New Delhi; drive to Agra (about 230 km, 3–4 h); Mehtab Bagh at sunset | Agra |
| 3 | Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort; drive to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri (about 240 km, 4–5 h) | Jaipur |
| 4 | Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal | Jaipur |
| 5 | Drive back to Delhi (about 280 km, 5–6 h) | Delhi |
| 6 | Fly Delhi to Kathmandu; Boudhanath at dusk | Kathmandu |
| 7 | Bhaktapur, Pashupatinath, Patan | Kathmandu |
| 8 | Drive to Bandipur (about 140 km, 4–5 h) | Bandipur |
| 9 | Bandipur to Pokhara (about 75 km, 2–3 h) | Pokhara |
| 10 | Sarangkot sunrise, Phewa Lake, World Peace Pagoda | Pokhara |
| 11 | Drive to Chitwan (about 150 km, 4–5 h) | Chitwan |
| 12 | Jeep safari and canoe | Chitwan |
| 13 | Drive to Kathmandu (about 165 km, 5–6 h); Kathmandu Durbar Square | Kathmandu |
| 14 | Swayambhunath; fly home | – |
Want to save another long drive? Fly Pokhara to Kathmandu or Bharatpur (for Chitwan) to Kathmandu; both are short domestic flights. Our 6-day Golden Triangle guide has more on the India half.
If your India Nepal tour itinerary crosses by road, remember that foreigners can cross only at designated points with immigration offices. These are the ones that matter for travellers:
| India side | Nepal side | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Sunauli (near Gorakhpur) | Belahiya / Bhairahawa | Varanasi, Lumbini, Pokhara; the most used by tourists |
| Raxaul (Bihar) | Birgunj | Bodh Gaya, Patna, Chitwan, Kathmandu |
| Rupaidiha (Uttar Pradesh) | Nepalgunj | Lucknow; western Nepal and Bardia |
| Panitanki (West Bengal) | Kakarbhitta | Darjeeling, Sikkim, eastern Nepal |
| Banbasa (Uttarakhand) | Mahendranagar (Bhimdatta) | Far-western Nepal |
We usually arrange a handover at the border: your India driver takes you to Indian immigration, and your Nepal driver meets you after Nepali immigration. It avoids the cross-border vehicle permits and gives you a driver who knows Nepal’s hill roads.
Cross in daylight. Ignore anyone at the border selling bus or train tickets. Indian citizens don’t need a passport stamp or visa for Nepal and can travel with a passport or voter ID.
Visas are the part of an India Nepal tour itinerary that trips people up most often.
Nepal: most nationalities get a tourist visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport and at the main land borders, including Belahiya. According to the Tribhuvan airport immigration office, it costs USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days and USD 125 for 90 days, and you can stay up to 150 days in a calendar year. Carry US dollars in clean notes and a passport photo. You can fill in the online form before you arrive to save time.
India: most visitors use the Indian e-Visa. You can leave India through any authorised checkpoint, including Sunauli, so a one-way trip from India into Nepal is simple.
Coming back into India? This is where people get caught. You need a visa that allows another entry, such as the one-year multiple-entry e-Tourist Visa. And the e-Visa only lets you enter at listed airports, seaports and land posts. In August 2026 India’s list included Nepal border posts at Raxaul, Rupaidiha and Jogbani, but not Sunauli. Check the official list before you plan an overland return, or simply fly back to Delhi.
If you have 17 to 21 days, the India Nepal tour itinerary opens up. These are the additions our guests enjoy most:

The months that suit an India Nepal tour itinerary are narrower than for either country alone. North India is hot from April to June; Nepal’s mountains hide in cloud from June to September.
| Months | India (Delhi, Agra, Varanasi) | Nepal (Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan) | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| October–November | Warm, dry; festival season | Clear, dry, best mountain views | Best overall |
| December–January | Cool; fog can delay trains, flights and early drives | Clear and cold; foggy mornings in the Terai | Good, with slack for fog |
| February–March | Pleasant; Holi in March | Warming; spring treks begin | Very good |
| April | Hot in the plains | Spring; rhododendrons; haze builds | Good if you can take the heat |
| May–June | Very hot (40 °C and above) | Hot in the Terai; monsoon arrives mid-June | Avoid for this route |
| July–September | Monsoon | Monsoon; landslides and flight delays | Avoid for this route |
Our pick for this India Nepal tour itinerary is mid-October to late November, or late February to March. Holi falls on 22 March 2027, and Diwali (Tihar in Nepal) on 8 November 2026, both wonderful times to travel if you book early.
These are the timings our drivers plan on for every India Nepal tour itinerary. Indian expressways are fast; Nepali hill roads are slow, so a shorter distance can take longer.
| Leg | Distance | Time by car |

In India, prices cover the car, driver, fuel, tolls, parking and state taxes. In Nepal they cover the car, driver, fuel, tolls and parking. Your drivers’ food and lodging are included in both. Hotels, meals, entry fees, guides, flights (including Delhi–Kathmandu) and visas are extra; we’ll gladly suggest hotels and book licensed local guides.

Before you book, run through the eight questions at the heart of this India Nepal tour itinerary:
If you can answer yes to most of these, your India Nepal tour itinerary will flow.
Think of the trip as one line across the map.
India first: Delhi and the Taj Mahal, then either Jaipur or the holy city of Varanasi. The crossing: by road at Sunauli, through Lumbini, or by air to Kathmandu. Nepal second: Pokhara for the mountains, Chitwan for the jungle, and the Kathmandu Valley to finish.
Choose your crossing, keep the line moving in one direction, and give the long days room to breathe. That’s all a good India Nepal tour itinerary needs.
Yes. Fourteen days is a good length for a first India Nepal tour itinerary. Spend about 6 to 7 days in India (Delhi, Agra and Varanasi or Jaipur) and 7 to 8 days in Nepal (Pokhara, Chitwan and the Kathmandu Valley). Add a week if you want Rajasthan, Khajuraho or a trek.
The best India Nepal tour itinerary for first-timers is Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, then a flight to Kathmandu, Bandipur, Pokhara and Chitwan. For pilgrims and road lovers, the overland route through Varanasi, the Sunauli border and Lumbini is richer.
Yes. The usual tourist route is via Agra, Lucknow or Varanasi and Gorakhpur to the Sunauli border, then Lumbini and Pokhara. It takes at least 4 to 5 days with stops and is best broken up with sightseeing.
About 1 hour 40 minutes. There are several direct flights a day from Delhi.
Sunauli to Belahiya, near Gorakhpur, is the most used. It links Varanasi with Lumbini and Pokhara, and Nepal issues tourist visas on arrival there. Raxaul to Birgunj suits travellers coming from Bodh Gaya.
USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days and USD 125 for 90 days. Pay in clean US dollar notes. Indian citizens do not need a visa for Nepal.
Only if your visa allows another entry and you enter at a port listed for e-Visas. In August 2026 that list included Raxaul, Rupaidiha and Jogbani but not Sunauli. Many travellers simply fly back to Delhi.
Yes. Foreigners must stop at the Indian immigration office in Sunauli for an exit stamp before walking into Nepal. It is easy to miss, and without it you can have problems leaving Nepal or re-entering India.
Mid-October to late November is best for both countries, with clear mountain views and pleasant weather in the plains. Late February and March is the next best. Avoid May to September.
Yes. Nepal is 15 minutes ahead of India. It is a small difference, but it catches people out on the morning after the border.
Indian rupee notes of 100 or less are widely accepted. Nepal Rastra Bank now also allows Indian 200 and 500 notes, up to a total of 25,000 rupees per person, but it is simplest to change money or use ATMs in Nepal.
About 30 km from Sunauli, roughly an hour’s drive. It makes Lumbini the natural first stop in Nepal if you cross overland.
Combining our 4-day Golden Triangle tour with our 9-day Nepal Wildlife Safari Tour costs USD 1,157 for a sedan, USD 1,586 for an SUV or USD 2,080 for a Tempo Traveller, for the whole vehicle. Hotels, flights and entry fees are extra.
Yes. Khajuraho fits between Agra and Varanasi and adds about two days. Our Golden Triangle, Khajuraho and Varanasi tour covers the India half in 10 days.
Yes, with a private car and driver. The main risks are fog in December and January, long days and touts at the border. Travel in daylight and keep your passports with you, not in the boot.
Yes. It is written for the October 2026 to June 2027 season. Border rules, visa fees and e-Visa ports change, so confirm them before you travel.
A good India Nepal tour itinerary isn’t about how many cities you tick off. It’s about direction, pace and one smart choice at the border.
One direction? The right months? Agra not on a Friday? Dollars for the visa? A plan for getting back into India, or a flight home from Kathmandu?
If the answer is yes, two weeks is enough to see the Taj Mahal at dawn and the Annapurnas at sunrise. If not, you’ll mostly see the inside of a car.
Once you plan around those things, building an India Nepal tour itinerary becomes simple. For more help, read our guide on how to plan a combined India and Nepal trip, our Golden Triangle days guide or our India and Nepal travel trends for 2027.
