Bikaner

Bikaner is the Rajasthan city most itineraries skip, which is precisely why some of our guests love it. Fewer tour buses, a fort in better condition than most, and one of the strangest temples in India an hour away.

Was es zu sehen gibt

Junagarh Fort was never conquered, and unlike the hill forts it sits on flat ground. The interiors are exceptional and far less crowded than Amber or Mehrangarh.

The Karni Mata temple at Deshnoke, thirty kilometres south, is home to thousands of rats, which are revered and fed. You walk barefoot. It is not for everybody and we will say so plainly before you go, but it is unlike anything else you will see.

The National Research Centre on Camels on the edge of town is a working government breeding farm, open in the afternoons.

Anreise und Fahrzeiten

Five and a half hours from Jaisalmer, five from Jodhpur, and around seven from Delhi. It works best as a stop between Delhi and Jaisalmer rather than a destination on its own.

Wie lange bleiben

One night. Half a day covers the fort and the temple comfortably.

Wann Sie kommen sollten

November to February. This is deep desert and summer is severe.

A suggested day

Morning at Junagarh Fort, which has never been conquered and has some of the richest painted interiors in Rajasthan. Late morning, drive 30 km south to Deshnoke for the Karni Mata Temple, famous for the thousands of rats that live there and are fed as holy. In the afternoon, visit the camel research centre outside town, then walk the old city lanes past the carved red sandstone Rampuria havelis.

Where to stay

Lalgarh Palace and other heritage hotels give you the royal feel. Smaller haveli hotels in the old city are better if you want to walk out into the bazaar.

Praktische Tipps

  • At Karni Mata you go barefoot, as in every temple. Seeing a white rat is said to bring good luck.
  • Bikaner is famous for bhujia, a crunchy spiced snack. Buy it fresh in the old city.
  • Bikaner sits well between Jaisalmer and Shekhawati or Jaipur, so it breaks up a long drive.

Häufige Fragen

Is Bikaner worth a stop?

Yes, on a longer Rajasthan trip. It is much less visited than Jodhpur or Jaipur, and Junagarh Fort is one of the best-kept forts in the state.

Do we have to go inside the rat temple?

No. Some guests love it, others prefer to stay outside. It is your choice.

How far is Bikaner from Jaisalmer and Jaipur?

About 330 km from Jaisalmer, five to six hours. About 330 km from Jaipur, roughly six hours, or less if you break the drive in Shekhawati.
