River. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was the capital of the Bundela kings, and their palaces, temples and cenotaphs still stand almost untouched. Most travellers stop here on the road between Agra and Khajuraho, and it is a short drive from Jhansi railway station.
We include Orchha in our private car and driver tours of central India, often as a stop between Agra and Khajuraho. You get your own car and driver for the whole trip, and you choose how long to stay. Tell us your dates and we reply with a fixed price, usually within 24 hours. A detailed day-by-day itinerary costs €100, and the full €100 is deducted from your tour price when you book.
The Bundela Rajput king Rudra Pratap Singh founded Orchha in 1531 on an island in the Betwa river. His successors built the great palaces over the next century. Jahangir Mahal was built by Bir Singh Deo to welcome the Mughal emperor Jahangir, who stayed only one night. When the capital moved to Tikamgarh in the 18th century, Orchha was left almost as it was, which is why so much survives today with so few changes.
By road, Orchha is about four and a half to five hours from Agra and about four hours from Khajuraho, so it breaks that long drive neatly in two. If you prefer the train for part of the way, the fast morning trains from Delhi and Agra reach Jhansi, 16 km from Orchha, and your driver can meet you at the station.
One night is right for most people. Arrive by lunch, see the palaces in the afternoon, the chhatris by the river at sunset, and the evening aarti at the Ram Raja Temple, with music and lamps. Leave after breakfast for Khajuraho. Stay a second night only if you want a slow day by the river.
Yes, if you are travelling between Agra and Khajuraho or Varanasi. It turns a long drive into two easy days and shows you a royal town with very few tourists.
Our Golden Triangle with Khajuraho and Varanasi stops here on the way from Agra to Khajuraho, and we add it to any central India route on request. See also our guides to Agra and Khajuraho.
