Nepal Wildlife Safari Tour 9 Days: tour overview

Chitwan is the reason to come. The park holds one of the densest populations of greater one-horned rhino anywhere, along with Bengal tiger, sloth bear, gharial and more than five hundred bird species. This itinerary gives you two full days there.

Either side of the park it covers the two places most travellers to Nepal actually remember: the Kathmandu Valley's temple cities, and Pokhara under the Annapurnas. You travel privately throughout — your own vehicle and driver, with fuel, tolls, road taxes and route permits paid.

Park entry fees, the safari drives and the canoe are booked separately and are not in this price. We arrange them for you at cost when you tell us your dates.

Our other Nepal routes — the Kathmandu valley, Pokhara, Chitwan and Mustang — are on the Nepal tours page. If you want to cross the border and see both countries in one trip, that is the India and Nepal page.

  • Evening: A first walk through Thamel or Durbar Marg, and dinner of dal bhat or momos.

JOUR02Jour 02

Kathmandu valley · Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Swayambhunath and Durbar Square

The three great shrines of the valley with a licensed guide, at an unhurried pace.

  • 9:00 a.m.: Swayambhunath, the 'monkey temple' stupa on a hill over the city, about 1½ hours.
  • 11:00 a.m.: Kathmandu Durbar Square: the old royal palace, Kumari Ghar, home of the living goddess.
  • 2:30 p.m.: Pashupatinath, Nepal's holiest Hindu temple, on the Bagmati river (non-Hindus watch from the far bank).
  • 4:30 p.m.: Boudhanath, one of the largest stupas in the world, for the evening kora with Tibetan pilgrims, and butter tea on a rooftop.
  • Tickets: Kathmandu valley heritage sites each charge foreign visitors an entry fee, from about NPR 200 at Swayambhunath to about NPR 1,000–1,800 at Pashupatinath and the Durbar Squares.
  • Tip: Cremations take place at Pashupatinath; watch respectfully and do not photograph mourners closely.
  • Overnight: Kathmandu
JOUR03Jour 03

Bhaktapur, then drive to Chitwan

The best-preserved medieval city of the valley, then south to the jungle.

  • 8:00 a.m.: Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Nyatapola temple and the potters' square, about 2 hours.
  • Drive: Bhaktapur to Chitwan is about 170 km, 5–6 hours.

JOUR04Jour 04

Chitwan National Park · jeep safari and canoe

Nepal's best wildlife park: one-horned rhinoceros, gharial and mugger crocodiles, sloth bears and, with luck, a tiger.

  • Early morning: Canoe down the Rapti river at dawn, watching kingfishers and crocodiles on the banks, then a short jungle walk with two naturalists.
  • Afternoon: Jeep safari deep into the park (about 4 hours), past grasslands where rhinos graze.
  • Evening: Tharu cultural show, with the stick dance of the indigenous people of the Terai.
  • Tickets: The park permit (per person per day) and safaris are booked through your lodge.
  • Tip: Wear neutral colours and bring insect repellent.
  • Overnight: Chitwan (Sauraha)
JOUR05Jour 05

Chitwan · a second day in the park

More time in the jungle means much better chances of rhino, sloth bear and the rare tiger.

  • Morning: Bird walk or a longer guided jungle walk (more than 500 bird species are recorded here).
  • Afternoon: The elephant breeding centre and gharial breeding centre, then a Tharu village by bicycle.
  • Sunset: Drinks on the Rapti river bank.
  • Overnight: Chitwan
JOUR06Jour 06

Chitwan to Pokhara

North into the hills to Phewa Lake.

  • Drive: About 160 km, 5 hours.

  • Morning: The World Peace Pagoda on the ridge across the lake.
  • Afternoon: Devi's Fall, Gupteshwor Mahadev cave and the International Mountain Museum.
  • Optional: Paragliding from Sarangkot (about 30 minutes in the air), the best in Nepal.
  • Tickets: Small entry fees at the falls, cave and museum.

Nepal Wildlife Safari Tour 9 Days: frequently asked questions

Les vraies questions que nos voyageurs posent avant de réserver, avec les réponses de la famille qui conduit sur ces routes.

Very probably. Chitwan has a healthy one-horned rhino population and sightings on jeep safaris and canoe trips are common — far more reliable than tiger sightings, which are rare and should not be your expectation. You will also see deer, gharial and crocodile, wild boar and a great many birds.

No. Chitwan National Park charges an entry fee per person per day, and jeep safaris, canoe trips and the elephant breeding centre are each booked and paid separately in Sauraha. We drive you there, take you to the park office, and wait.

We do not book them, and we will say why: the welfare record is poor. Jeep safaris and walking safaris see as much, and the elephant breeding centre lets you see the animals without riding them. If you want an elephant ride you can arrange it locally, but it will not come from us.

February to April, after the tall elephant grass has been cut, is when visibility in the park is highest. October and November are also good and cooler. The park has restricted access during the monsoon and the grass is head-height, which makes spotting hard.

No. On our Nepal road tours the price covers the vehicle, the driver, fuel, tolls and road taxes, parking and permits. Kathmandu, Pokhara and Sauraha all have accommodation from very cheap to genuinely luxurious, and we take no commission on rooms — so you choose. We will book on your behalf at cost if you prefer.

Kathmandu to Pokhara is around six to seven hours on a road that is scenic but slow and often busy with trucks. Pokhara to Chitwan is about five hours. These are honest figures; anyone quoting you four hours to Pokhara has not driven it recently.

Kathmandu to Pokhara takes twenty-five minutes by air and there are several flights daily. Many travellers fly one way and drive the other, which we think is a sensible compromise. We will meet you at either airport and price it either way.

From Pokhara, on a clear morning, Machhapuchhre and the Annapurnas sit right above the lake and it is remarkable. In haze you will see very little. October to December gives the clearest air; Sarangkot at dawn is the classic viewpoint and we will drive you up for it.

October and November are the clearest and busiest. March to May is warm with rhododendron in flower and more haze. The monsoon from June to September brings cloud and landslide risk on the mountain roads. December to February is cold and clear at altitude but fine in Chitwan and Pokhara.

Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport or at the land borders — 15, 30 or 90 day options, paid in cash or card. Bring a passport photo to save time. Visa cost is never included in our prices.
