Haridwar, Rishikesh and Mussoorie: tour overview

Haridwar and Rishikesh sit about twenty minutes apart where the Ganges comes out of the Himalaya onto the plain, and they could not be less alike. Haridwar is an old pilgrimage city, busy and devotional, and the Ganga aarti at Har ki Pauri each evening draws thousands. Rishikesh upstream is quieter, full of ashrams and yoga schools, with white water above the town.

Mussoorie, two hours further up, is a colonial hill station on a ridge with the snow peaks visible on a clear morning.

Five days by road covers all three without hurrying. We drive; you choose where you sleep.

Our other north India routes — Punjab, Himachal and the Uttarakhand hills — are on the India tours page, and what a car and driver actually costs is set out on private car and driver in India.

Delhi to Haridwar · Ganga aarti at Har ki Pauri

North to the place where the Ganges leaves the mountains, for the most famous evening prayer in India.

  • Morning: Pick-up in Delhi at 9 a.m.
  • Drive: Delhi to Haridwar is about 220 km, 5–5½ hours.
  • Evening: Har ki Pauri ghat for the Ganga aarti at sunset: huge brass lamps, bells and thousands of floating leaf boats with flames. Arrive 45 minutes early for a good spot.
  • Eat: Haridwar is vegetarian and alcohol-free. Try kachori and aloo sabzi at Mohan Ji Puri Wale.
  • Tip: Keep your shoes in the car. Ignore anyone collecting 'donations' with receipt books; donate only at the official counters.
  • Overnight: Haridwar
JOUR02Jour 2

Haridwar to Rishikesh · the yoga capital

A hilltop temple in Haridwar, then up the river to Rishikesh.

  • Morning: Mansa Devi temple by ropeway (10 minutes) for the view over the city and river.
  • Drive: Haridwar to Rishikesh is about 25 km, 45 minutes.
  • Afternoon: Ram Jhula and the new Bajrang Setu glass bridge, the temples along the river, and the Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia), where the band stayed in 1968, with its murals.
  • Evening: The Ganga aarti at Parmarth Niketan, smaller and more intimate than Haridwar's.
  • Tickets: Mansa Devi ropeway about ₹200 return; Beatles Ashram about ₹600 for foreign visitors.

  • Tickets: Rafting about ₹600–1,500 per person; Neer Garh small fee.

Haridwar, Rishikesh and Mussoorie: frequently asked questions

Les vraies questions que nos voyageurs posent avant de réserver, avec les réponses de la famille qui conduit sur ces routes.

It starts around sunset, so roughly 5.45 pm in winter and 6.45 to 7 pm in summer. Get to Har ki Pauri at least forty minutes early for somewhere decent to stand. It is free. Our driver will drop you as close as vehicles are allowed and tell you where to walk.

Yes. Both Haridwar and Rishikesh are legally vegetarian and alcohol-free, and this is enforced. Plan accordingly — it surprises people.

Roughly late September to the end of June. The river is closed for rafting during the monsoon, from July to mid-September, for safety. Rafting is booked and paid separately at the river; it is not part of our price.

Sometimes. On a clear morning, especially October to December and after rain, the Garhwal peaks are visible from Gun Hill and Lal Tibba. In haze you will see nothing. Nobody can promise a view.

No. Our price is the vehicle, driver, fuel, tolls, state taxes, parking and permits. Rishikesh in particular has excellent cheap ashram stays and expensive riverside resorts — that is your choice to make.

Yes, but properly. Char Dham is a twelve-day pilgrimage of its own and the Valley of Flowers has a short season. Ask us and we will plan one rather than tack it on the end of this.

Largely yes — the driving is moderate and the sights are close to the road. Har ki Pauri involves walking and crowds, and Mansa Devi has steps unless you take the cable car. Tell us about mobility and we will plan around it.
