Rajasthan Royal Odyssey: Palaces, Forts & Deserts

Upon arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in New Delhi, you will be warmly greeted by your professional chauffeur who will assist with your luggage and escort you to your private, air-conditioned vehicle.

The remainder of the day is yours to relax after your journey. In the evening, you may choose to take a short orientation walk near your hotel or enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant (can be arranged on request).

Embark on a full-day exploration of India’s vibrant capital.

Begin in Old Delhi. Visit the magnificent Jama Masjid, one of India’s largest mosques. From there, experience a thrilling rickshaw ride through the narrow, bustling lanes of Chandni Chowk, where spice markets, silver bazaars, and centuries-old shops create an unforgettable sensory experience. Drive past the iconic Red Fort (Lal Qila), a UNESCO World Heritage site.

After lunch (own arrangement), explore New Delhi. Drive along the ceremonial Rajpath to view India Gate, a war memorial, and the imposing Rashtrapati Bhavan (Presidential Palace). Continue to Humayun’s Tomb, a stunning precursor to the Taj Mahal, and end the day at Qutub Minar, a 73-meter-tall victory tower and another UNESCO-listed monument.

Depart from Delhi and drive toward Agra. En route, you may stop at Mathura, the sacred birthplace of Lord Krishna. Visit the Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple and explore the vibrant ghats along the Yamuna River.

Continue to Agra, arriving by late afternoon. In the evening, you may take a leisurely walk along the waterfront for a first glimpse of the Taj Mahal as the sun sets.

Rise early for the highlight of your royal odyssey: a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal. Witness the marble mausoleum transform in color as the sun rises over the Yamuna River. Your guide will share stories of Emperor Shah Jahan’s eternal tribute to his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Ample time is provided for photography and quiet reflection.

Later, visit the imposing Agra Fort, a UNESCO-listed red sandstone fortress where Mughal emperors once ruled. Explore its palaces, audience halls, and mosques, with distant views of the Taj Mahal.

The afternoon is at leisure. You may choose to explore local marble inlay work, a craft for which Agra is renowned, or visit the Mehtab Bagh gardens for a stunning view of the Taj Mahal from across the river.

Depart for Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, famously known as the Pink City. En route, visit Fatehpur Sikri, a well-preserved ghost city that served as the Mughal capital for a brief period under Emperor Akbar. Explore the Buland Darwaza (Gate of Victory), Jama Masjid, and the tomb of Salim Chishti.

Continue to Jaipur, arriving by late afternoon. The evening is free to explore the vibrant local bazaars, known for textiles, gemstones, and handicrafts.

Drive to the hilltop Amber Fort, a sprawling Rajput fortress with a network of palaces, halls, and gardens. Enjoy a thrilling jeep ride (or optional elephant ride) up to the main entrance. Explore the Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) and enjoy panoramic views of Maota Lake.

Return to the city to visit City Palace, which still houses the Jaipur royal family. Explore its museums, courtyards, and art collections. Nearby, marvel at Jantar Mantar, an astronomical observatory and UNESCO site. End the day with a photo stop at the iconic Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds), with its intricate honeycomb façade.

Depart for Pushkar, one of India’s holiest towns, nestled around a serene lake. Upon arrival, explore the sacred Pushkar Lake with its 52 ghats and 400 temples. Visit the Brahma Temple, one of the very few temples in the world dedicated to Lord Brahma, the creator in the Hindu trinity.

Walk through the narrow lanes of the town, lined with colorful shops selling religious items, textiles, and handicrafts. In the evening, you may choose to attend the aarti ceremony at the lake, a spiritual experience as lamps are lit and prayers echo across the water.

Depart for Udaipur, the romantic capital of the Mewar kingdom, often called the City of Lakes. The scenic drive takes you through the Aravalli hills and rural Rajasthan.

Upon arrival, settle in and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of this lakeside city. In the evening, you may take a leisurely walk along the Fateh Sagar Lake or explore the local markets.

Begin your exploration of Udaipur with a visit to the magnificent City Palace, the largest palace complex in Rajasthan. Overlooking Lake Pichola, this sprawling structure of courtyards, galleries, and terraces offers a fascinating glimpse into the royal heritage of Mewar. Explore the Crystal Gallery within the palace complex, housing an exquisite collection of crystal furnishings.

Visit the Jagdish Temple, a beautifully carved Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located just outside the palace gates.

In the afternoon, embark on a boat ride on Lake Pichola. Glide across the tranquil waters, passing by the Jag Mandir island palace and the iconic Lake Palace (now a luxury hotel), appearing to float on the lake’s surface.

As the sun begins to set, drive to the Monsoon Palace (Sajjangarh Fort), perched on a hilltop overlooking the city. Enjoy panoramic views of Udaipur, its lakes, and the surrounding Aravalli hills as the sky transforms into shades of orange and gold.

Depart from Udaipur and drive toward Jodhpur. En route, visit Ranakpur, home to the magnificent Chaumukha Temple, a masterpiece of Jain architecture. The temple, dedicated to Tirthankara Adinath, features 1,444 uniquely carved marble pillars, each one different from the others. Marvel at the intricate carvings, domes, and the serene atmosphere of this 15th-century marvel.

Continue your journey to Jodhpur, the Blue City, arriving by late afternoon. Upon arrival, you may take a gentle stroll through the Sardar Market near the clock tower, exploring the vibrant bazaars filled with spices, textiles, and handicrafts.

Begin your exploration of Jodhpur with a visit to the imposing Mehrangarh Fort, one of India’s largest and most impressive forts. Perched on a rocky hill, the fort towers over the city. Explore its palaces, including the Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace), and Phool Mahal (Flower Palace). The fort’s museum houses an exceptional collection of palanquins, howdahs, and royal artifacts. From the ramparts, enjoy breathtaking views of the blue-painted houses of the old city below.

Visit Jaswant Thada, a beautiful marble cenotaph built in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The intricately carved structure, set amidst peaceful gardens, offers a serene atmosphere and stunning views of Mehrangarh Fort.

In the afternoon, wander through the blue lanes of the old city, where the indigo-painted houses create a photographer’s paradise. Visit the Umaid Bhawan Palace, a magnificent 20th-century palace (part of which is a luxury hotel) and explore its museum showcasing the royal family’s history and vintage cars.

Depart for Jaisalmer, the Golden City, rising from the heart of the Thar Desert. The journey takes you through the arid landscape of western Rajasthan, passing by rural villages and camel caravans.

Upon arrival, check in and settle into the golden-hued atmosphere of this desert outpost. The evening is at leisure to explore the local markets or simply absorb the unique character of the city.

Begin your exploration of Jaisalmer with a visit to the Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Quila), a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the few “living forts” in the world, with nearly a quarter of the city’s population residing within its walls. Explore the Raj Mahal (Royal Palace), Jain Temples with their intricate carvings, and wander through the narrow lanes lined with shops and homes.

Visit the city’s magnificent havelis, elaborately carved merchant mansions built from golden sandstone. Explore Patwon Ki Haveli, the largest and most ornate, Salim Singh Ki Haveli, with its distinctive peacock-shaped roof, and Nathmal Ki Haveli, notable for its exquisite carvings and two identical halves carved by rival craftsmen.

In the late afternoon, visit Gadisar Lake, a scenic man-made reservoir surrounded by temples, shrines, and chhatris. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere as the sun sets over the water.

Depart for the Sam Sand Dunes, a breathtaking expanse of rolling desert sands located approximately 40 kilometers from Jaisalmer. Upon arrival, embark on a camel safari across the dunes, experiencing the timeless rhythm of desert travel. As the sun begins its descent, watch the dunes transform into shades of gold and amber.

For an immersive desert experience, you may choose to stay overnight at a luxury desert camp, complete with comfortable tents, traditional Rajasthani cuisine, and cultural performances including folk music and dance under a canopy of stars. Alternatively, return to Jaisalmer for the evening.

Depart for Bikaner, a vibrant desert city known for its red sandstone architecture and unique cultural heritage. The journey takes you through the stark beauty of the Thar Desert.

Upon arrival, settle in. In the evening, you may explore the local bazaars or visit the Karni Mata Temple in nearby Deshnoke, famously known as the Rat Temple. This unique temple is home to thousands of holy rats (kabbas) that are revered and protected. Seeing them is considered auspicious.

Begin your exploration of Bikaner with a visit to Junagarh Fort, a magnificent red sandstone fortress that has never been conquered. Unlike most Rajasthan forts built on hilltops, Junagarh stands on the plains. Explore its palaces, including the Anup Mahal, Phool Mahal, and Karan Mahal, each adorned with exquisite mirror work, paintings, and intricate carvings.

Visit the Lalgarh Palace, a stunning red sandstone palace built in the early 20th century, showcasing a fusion of Rajput, Mughal, and European architectural styles. Part of the palace now serves as a museum and heritage hotel.

In the afternoon, visit the National Research Centre on Camel (Camel Breeding Farm), where you can see various breeds of camels, learn about their importance in desert culture, and enjoy a camel ride if desired.

Depart for Mandawa, located in the heart of the Shekhawati region, often called the “open-air art gallery” of Rajasthan. This region is famous for its painted havelis — elaborately decorated merchant mansions adorned with exquisite frescoes depicting mythological scenes, European influences, and daily life.

Upon arrival, wander through the charming lanes of Mandawa. Visit the Mandawa Fort, which now houses a heritage hotel and museum. Explore the Murmuria Haveli, Goenka Haveli, and Jhunjhunwala Haveli, each a testament to the artistic patronage of the wealthy merchants who once thrived on the Silk Route. The frescoes range from traditional Indian motifs to surprisingly modern images of cars, airplanes, and European figures.

Spend the afternoon soaking in the unique artistic heritage of this region.

After breakfast, depart from Mandawa and drive back to Delhi. The journey takes you through the rural landscapes of Haryana and Rajasthan.
Upon arrival in Delhi, your chauffeur will transfer you to Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) for your departure flight, bringing your 18-day royal odyssey through Rajasthan to a close.
