The road to Lo Manthang means Upper Mustang is now reachable by those who cannot spare a fortnight or cannot walk at altitude for two weeks. You still cross the same desert, the same passes and the same villages; you simply do it in a private jeep with a driver who knows the river crossings.
We build in short walks at each stop — the caves above Chhoser, the monasteries inside Lo Manthang's walls, the cliffs at Drakmar — so this is not a trip spent looking through a window.
The restricted-area permit at USD 50 per person per day is included, as is the ACAP permit. The road is rough; expect five to six hours of driving on the longer days.
Our other Nepal routes — the Kathmandu valley, Pokhara, Chitwan and Mustang — are on the Nepal tours page. If you want to cross the border and see both countries in one trip, that is the India and Nepal page.

I travelled twice with Go India Nepal. In 2019 for 4 weeks with Babu, together with my 2 adult daughters, and in 2025 2 weeks with Suraj, together with my wife. Both trips were perfect !! Both are safe drivers, speak excellent English, and very respectful to their guests. Highly recommended.

Just finished our fantastic tour around Rajasthan and Agra with Babu. Our 17 day journey was the first time we travelled with a driver since we have been travelling to quite some places just by ourselves over the last years but thought this modality was the right option in chaotic India. Real questions our travellers ask before they book, answered by the family who drives these routes.','goindianepal'); ?>
Rough. It is unpaved for most of the way beyond Kagbeni, crosses river beds, and is dusty and jarring. A jeep handles it; a car does not. We are telling you this plainly because some operators sell it as a scenic drive and it is not — it is an adventure drive, and worth it, but you will feel it.
Yes. Driving does not exempt you. The Upper Mustang restricted area permit is currently 500 US dollars per person for ten days plus the Annapurna Conservation Area permit, and a registered guide and a minimum of two travellers are still required.
Time and legs. The trek is fourteen days of walking; the jeep tour reaches the same walled capital, the same cave monasteries and the same landscape in ten days without the daily hiking. Travellers with limited time, or who cannot walk seven hours a day, get to see Lo Manthang this way.
Yes — this route is the exception among our driving trips. Lodging along the Mustang road is simple guesthouses with no realistic way for you to book ahead independently, so we include your accommodation and meals on the Mustang section, as we do on our treks.
Lo Manthang is around 3,840 metres and the road crosses passes above 4,000. Because you gain height quickly by vehicle rather than slowly on foot, altitude can actually hit harder here. The itinerary includes acclimatisation nights, and we do not compress it.
March to November. Like the trek, the jeep tour works through the monsoon because Mustang sits in the Annapurna rain shadow — though the road down in the Kali Gandaki gorge can be affected by rain lower down. Winter is very cold and parts of the road close.
Yes, and most people do — the route starts from Pokhara or Jomsom. We can drive you from Kathmandu, or you can fly Pokhara to Jomsom and we meet you there, which saves a hard day. Tell us your total time and we will build it around that.
