The Brahma Temple is the reason pilgrims come. There are very few temples to Brahma anywhere in the world and this is the most important of them.
The lake and its 52 ghats. Walking the ring at dusk, when the lamps go on and the bathing finishes, is the thing to do here. A word of warning we give every guest: men will approach you on the ghats offering a "Pushkar passport" blessing and then demand a large donation. A polite, firm no is all that is needed.
The bazaar is genuinely good for textiles and silver, and less pushy than Jaipur.
For about a week each November the town fills with tens of thousands of people and several thousand camels. It is extraordinary and it is chaos. Hotels triple their prices and book out months ahead. If you want it, tell us early.
Three hours from Jaipur, two from Ajmer, and about seven from Udaipur. It sits neatly between Jaipur and Jodhpur, which is how most of our guests fit it in.
One night is enough for most people. Two if you want to properly slow down, which is what Pushkar is for.
October to March. November if you want the fair and can handle the crowds.
Start early on the ghats around the lake, when pilgrims come down to bathe and the town is at its most peaceful. Visit the Brahma Temple, one of very few temples to Brahma in India. In the afternoon, take the ropeway up to the Savitri Temple on the hill for the view over the lake and the desert at sunset.
Small guesthouses and heritage hotels sit close to the lake and the main bazaar. Larger resorts with pools are on the edge of town, a few minutes by car, and are quieter at night.
About 150 km, roughly three hours by car. It fits well between Jaipur and Jodhpur or Udaipur.
Yes, for most people. Stay two if you come for the camel fair or want a quiet break from driving.
It is held around the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartik, which usually falls in late October or November. The dates change every year, so ask us for the exact days.
Tell us when you want to travel and how long you have. We come back with a route, the vehicle it needs and one price, usually within 24 hours. Our day rates are published in full, and your hotels stay your own choice.
