This Trek is more than a hike; it's a pilgrimage for adventurers. This meticulously planned 14-day itinerary is designed for proper acclimatization, maximizing your chances of success and safety. You'll fly into the world's most dramatic airstrip at Lukla, follow the trail of legendary mountaineers through the Khumbu Valley, immerse yourself in the rich Sherpa culture at ancient monasteries, and be humbled by the sheer scale of the Himalayas. The climax is your arrival at the base camp of the world's highest mountain, a moment of unparalleled achievement.
Our other Nepal routes — the Kathmandu valley, Pokhara, Chitwan and Mustang — are on the Nepal tours page. If you want to cross the border and see both countries in one trip, that is the India and Nepal page.

Day-by-day itinerary
DAY01Day 01
Arrive in Kathmandu (1,400m)
Met at the airport and transferred to your hotel in Thamel. Your guide runs through the route, checks your kit and answers questions over dinner.
DAY02Day 02
Fly to Lukla (2,840m), trek to Phakding (2,610m)
An early flight into the Khumbu and one of the most dramatic airstrips anywhere. An easy three to four hour walk down the Dudh Koshi valley settles you into the rhythm.
DAY03Day 03

Six hours, crossing the Hillary Suspension Bridge and climbing steeply into the Sagarmatha National Park. The first sight of Everest comes on the way up, weather permitting.
DAY04Day 04
Acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar
A rest day that is not a rest: a morning hike up to the Everest View Hotel and the Sherpa villages of Khumjung and Khunde, then back down to sleep low. This is what makes the rest of the trek work.
DAY05Day 05
Namche to Tengboche (3,860m)
Five hours along a high traverse with Ama Dablam ahead, dropping to the river and climbing to Tengboche monastery, the spiritual centre of the Khumbu.
DAY06Day 06

Five to six hours through rhododendron forest to Pangboche, then above the treeline into the open Imja valley.
DAY07Day 07
Acclimatisation day in Dingboche
A climb up Nangkartshang ridge to around 5,000m for the views over Makalu, Lhotse and Island Peak, then back down to Dingboche to sleep.
DAY08Day 08
Dingboche to Lobuche (4,940m)
Five hours across the Thukla pass, past the memorials to climbers lost on Everest, and up beside the Khumbu glacier.
DAY09Day 09
Lobuche to Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp (5,364m)
The big day: seven to eight hours over glacial moraine to Gorak Shep, then out onto the Khumbu glacier to Base Camp itself, and back to Gorak Shep to sleep.
DAY10Day 10
Kala Patthar (5,545m) at sunrise, descend to Pheriche (4,240m)
Up in the dark for the classic view of Everest's summit pyramid from Kala Patthar, then a long descent into thicker air.
DAY11Day 11
Pheriche to Namche Bazaar
Six to seven hours retracing the valley, with a very different feeling now that the altitude is behind you.

Namche to Lukla
The last walking day, around seven hours, ending with a celebration dinner with your guide and porters.
DAY13Day 13
Fly Lukla to Kathmandu

You need to be able to walk five to seven hours a day, on rough ground, uphill, for two weeks. You do not need any climbing skill or technical equipment. Most reasonably active people who train by hill-walking for a few months manage it. It is endurance and altitude, not difficulty.
Base Camp is 5,364 metres and Kala Patthar, the viewpoint most people also climb, is 5,545 metres. Namche Bazaar, where you first acclimatise, is 3,440 metres. Altitude, not terrain, is what turns people back.
The itinerary is built around acclimatisation days at Namche and Dingboche, and it climbs slowly on purpose — a shorter trek is a more dangerous trek. Your guide watches for symptoms every day. If someone is unwell, we descend. That decision is never negotiable and never costs you an argument.
Yes. Unlike our road tours, trekking trips include your teahouse accommodation along the trail, all meals on trek, your guide, a porter, and the park and municipality permits. Trekking is the one kind of trip where we do include where you sleep, because on the trail there is no separate booking to make.
International flights, your Nepal visa, travel insurance with helicopter evacuation cover, drinks and snacks beyond the standard meals, hot showers and device charging in the teahouses, tips for your guide and porter, and your nights in Kathmandu at either end.
Yes, and we insist on it. Your policy must cover trekking to 5,600 metres and helicopter evacuation. Standard travel insurance usually does not. Rescue from the Khumbu is expensive and insurers will not pay retrospectively.
The trek starts and ends with a short flight to Lukla, which is weather-dependent and does get cancelled — sometimes for a day or more. Build a spare day into your plans at the end. In peak season flights often run from Ramechhap rather than Kathmandu, which means an early road transfer, and we will tell you which applies to your dates.
Late September to early December, and March to May. The autumn window has the clearest skies; spring is warmer with more haze and more people. Winter is cold but quiet, and the monsoon from June to August means cloud, leeches lower down and unreliable flights.
You can walk it faster. You should not. The two acclimatisation days are what keep people safe and are the reason our fourteen-day itinerary has a high completion rate. If you are short on time, a helicopter return from Gorak Shep saves days at the end more safely than rushing the ascent.
