The Golden Triangle shows you Mughal and Rajput India: the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and the palaces of Jaipur. Varanasi shows you something else entirely, the living heart of Hindu India on the bank of the Ganges, where daily life, prayer and death all happen in the open.
We drive you from Delhi to Agra and Jaipur in your own car with one driver. From Jaipur you take a short flight to Varanasi (there are direct flights most days, otherwise via Delhi), where our Varanasi driver and a local guide take over. Flights are not included in the price; we book them for you at cost if you wish.
In Varanasi we keep the days slow on purpose: a boat at sunrise, the old lanes, Sarnath where the Buddha first taught, and the evening aarti from the water. See all our India tours, or the Golden Triangle tours compared side by side.

DAY01Day 01
Arrive in Delhi · Old Delhi by rickshaw
Your driver meets you at the airport arrivals hall holding a sign with your name, helps with the bags and takes you to your hotel. There is nothing to organise on day one: rest, or if you land before about 2 p.m., spend the afternoon in Old Delhi.
Arrival: Indira Gandhi International Airport to central Delhi takes 45–75 minutes depending on traffic. Your driver tracks your flight, so a late landing is not a problem.
Afternoon (optional): Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque (1656). Climb the southern minaret for a view over Old Delhi. Then a cycle-rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk's spice, silver and wedding-card lanes, ending at Khari Baoli, Asia's largest spice market.
Tickets: Jama Masjid entry is free; a camera fee of about ₹300 applies and the minaret has a small separate ticket. Rickshaw about ₹500–700 for an hour. The mosque closes to visitors during prayer times.
Eat: Parathas in Paranthe Wali Gali, or kebabs and mutton korma at Karim's beside Jama Masjid (since 1913).
Tip: Cover shoulders and knees for the mosque; robes are lent at the gate. Keep your phone in a front pocket in the crowded lanes.
Overnight: Delhi
DAY02Day 02
New Delhi sights, then drive to Agra
A morning on the grand Mughal and British side of the capital, then the expressway to Agra in time for your first view of the Taj Mahal at sunset.
Morning: Leave the hotel around 8:30 a.m. Humayun's Tomb (1570), the garden tomb that inspired the Taj Mahal; allow an hour. Drive past India Gate and the President's House on Rajpath (Kartavya Path). Add the Qutub Minar (73 m, 1193) if you start early.
Drive: Delhi to Agra is about 230 km, 3½–4 hours on the Yamuna Expressway, with a clean rest stop halfway.
Late afternoon: Mehtab Bagh, the moonlight garden across the river from the Taj Mahal. You see the monument glow at sunset with almost nobody around.
Tickets: Humayun's Tomb about ₹600, Qutub Minar about ₹600, Mehtab Bagh about ₹300 (approx. 2026 prices for foreign visitors; Indian citizens pay much less).
Eat: Lunch at a highway dhaba or in Delhi before leaving. In Agra, try Mughlai food: dal makhani, mutton korma and the local sweet petha.
Tip: Mehtab Bagh closes at sunset, so your driver will make sure you reach Agra by 4:30 p.m. in winter.
Overnight: Agra
DAY03Day 03
Taj Mahal at sunrise, Fatehpur Sikri, Abhaneri stepwell, Jaipur
The day most people remember for the rest of their lives. You see the Taj Mahal in the soft first light before the crowds, then travel to Jaipur along the old Mughal route with two great stops.
Early morning: Leave the hotel at about 5:45 a.m. The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise. Spend 2–2½ hours: the gateway, the gardens, the mausoleum itself and the mosque on the west side. Back to the hotel for breakfast and check-out.
Mid-morning: Agra Fort (1 hour), the red sandstone fortress where Shah Jahan spent his last years looking at the Taj from the Musamman Burj.
Drive: Agra to Jaipur is about 240 km. With the stops it is a full day, roughly 7–8 hours door to door.
On the way: Fatehpur Sikri (40 km from Agra), Akbar's abandoned red-sandstone capital, about 1½ hours. Then Chand Baori at Abhaneri, a 9th-century stepwell with 3,500 steps in perfect geometry, about 30 minutes.
Tickets: Taj Mahal about ₹1,100 plus ₹200 to enter the main mausoleum; Agra Fort about ₹650; Fatehpur Sikri about ₹610 (approx. 2026 prices for foreign visitors; Indian citizens pay much less). The stepwell has a small fee.
Eat: Lunch at a roadside restaurant near Fatehpur Sikri or Bharatpur. Dinner in Jaipur: dal baati churma, the Rajasthani classic.
Tip: The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday; we arrange the order of days so you never miss it. Bring only a phone, camera, passport and water. Large bags, food, tripods and drones are not allowed. At Fatehpur Sikri, ignore unofficial 'guides' at the car park; your driver will point you to a licensed one if you want one.
Overnight: Jaipur
DAY04Day 04
Jaipur · Amber Fort, City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal
A full day in the Pink City, planned to beat the heat and the queues: the hill fort first thing, the old city in the middle of the day, and the bazaars when the light softens.
8:00 a.m.: Amber Fort as the gates open, before the tour buses. Allow 2–2½ hours for the Sheesh Mahal (mirror palace), the Ganesh Pol gate and the zenana courtyards. A licensed guide is worth hiring here.
On the way down: Panna Meena ka Kund, a geometric stepwell 5 minutes from the fort, and a photo stop at Jal Mahal, the palace in the lake.
Midday: The City Palace (still home to the royal family) and next door Jantar Mantar, the 18th-century astronomical observatory, now a UNESCO site. About 2½ hours for both.
Afternoon: The Hawa Mahal, the 'Palace of the Winds', best seen from the cafés on the rooftop opposite; go inside if you want to look out through the latticed windows.
Evening: Sunset at Nahargarh Fort on the ridge, or an evening in Johari and Bapu bazaars for textiles, block prints and silver.
Tickets: Amber Fort about ₹500, City Palace about ₹700, Jantar Mantar about ₹200, Hawa Mahal about ₹200 (approx. 2026 prices for foreign visitors; Indian citizens pay much less). A composite ticket covers several state monuments for two days.
Eat: Lunch: dal baati churma or a Rajasthani thali near the City Palace. Evening: lassi at Lassiwala on MI Road, or a full village-style dinner at Chokhi Dhani outside the city.
Tip: Please avoid the elephant ride at Amber; your driver takes you up by car or jeep. In the shops, prices are always negotiable, and your driver earns no commission from us: shop only where you want.
Overnight: Jaipur
DAY05Day 05
Jaipur to Varanasi by air · evening Ganga aarti
India's oldest living city, on the bank of the Ganges. Your driver meets you at the airport, and the first evening is the great river ceremony.
Arrival: Morning at leisure in Jaipur, then your driver takes you to Jaipur airport for the flight to Varanasi (direct on most days, about 1¾ hours, or via Delhi). Varanasi airport (Lal Bahadur Shastri, at Babatpur) is about 25 km from the city, 45–60 minutes by car. Flights from Delhi take about 1½ hours.
Afternoon: Check in near the ghats if you can: staying by the river makes the dawn boat easy tomorrow.
Sunset: The Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, about 45 minutes, starting around sunset (roughly 6–7 p.m. depending on the season). Young priests swing great brass fire lamps to bells, conch shells and chanting. We book you a boat so you watch it from the water, away from the crush on the steps.
Eat: Dinner in the old city: try kachori-sabzi, tamatar chaat at Kashi Chat Bhandar, and a clay cup of lassi.
Tip: The last stretch to the ghats is too narrow for cars; you walk 10–15 minutes with your guide or a cycle-rickshaw. Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket in the crowd.
Overnight: Varanasi
DAY06Day 06
Varanasi at dawn, the old city and Sarnath
The reason people come to Varanasi: the river at first light, then the lanes of the old city and the place where the Buddha gave his first sermon.
5:30 a.m.: A rowing boat along the ghats at sunrise, about 1½ hours: pilgrims bathing, priests at prayer, washermen at work and the cremation fires of Manikarnika from a respectful distance. If you are up even earlier, the Subah-e-Banaras morning ceremony at Assi Ghat starts before dawn.
8:00 a.m.: A walk through the old city lanes with a local guide, past the Kashi Vishwanath temple area, the Golden Temple of Shiva, then breakfast.
Afternoon: Sarnath, 10 km away: the Dhamek Stupa, the deer park where the Buddha first taught, the Mulagandha Kuti Vihara with its murals, and the archaeological museum with the Ashoka lion capital, India's national emblem. About 2½ hours.
Evening: Free, or a second aarti from the steps instead of the boat.
Tickets: The boat is about ₹1,000–1,500 an hour for a private rowing boat. Sarnath's site and museum have small tickets for foreign visitors; the museum is closed on Fridays.
Eat: Breakfast of kachori and jalebi in the lanes; lunch near Sarnath. In winter (November to February) try malaiyo, a saffron milk foam sold only in the early morning.
Tip: Do not photograph cremations or mourners. Phones and bags are not allowed inside Kashi Vishwanath temple; your guide shows you the lockers if you want to go in.
Overnight: Varanasi
DAY07Day 07
Varanasi · Ramnagar Fort, silk weavers and the river at dusk
A slower day to see the city beyond the ghats.
Morning: Ramnagar Fort across the river, the 18th-century home of the Maharaja of Benares, with its museum of vintage cars, palanquins and clocks. Then the Banaras Hindu University campus and its Bharat Kala Bhavan art museum.
Afternoon: A visit to a family of Banarasi silk weavers working on hand looms; there is no obligation to buy.
Evening: Sunset on the river from Assi Ghat, the quieter southern end of the ghats, and dinner by the water.
Tickets: Ramnagar Fort and Bharat Kala Bhavan have small entry tickets.
Eat: A Banarasi thali, and the famous paan to finish if you are brave.
Overnight: Varanasi
DAY08Day 08
Departure from Varanasi
A last morning by the river, then the airport.
Morning: A last walk along the ghats, or a silk-weaving workshop where Banarasi saris are still woven on hand looms.
Drop: Varanasi airport, 45–60 minutes from the city. Daily flights to Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, and to Kathmandu on some days.

Golden Triangle with Varanasi: frequently asked questions
Real questions our travellers ask before they book, answered by the family who drives these routes.
Varanasi is about 800 km from Jaipur, at least 12 hours by road. The flight takes under two hours, so you lose half a day instead of two. If you prefer to go by land, we can add Orchha and Khajuraho on the way; see our Golden Triangle with Khajuraho and Varanasi tour.
No. The price covers your private car, driver, fuel, tolls and parking. We book flights for you at cost, or you can book them yourself.
Yes. It is crowded and intense, but very safe with a local guide. Children usually love the boat rides and the aarti. Some parents prefer to skip the cremation ghats; we simply route the boat around them.
October to March. December and January mornings on the river are misty and cool. April to June is very hot, and in the monsoon (July to September) the Ganges rises and boats may not run.
