Jaisalmer is the furthest west most travellers get in India, and the drive out there is part of why it is worth going. The landscape thins out steadily until it is scrub, then sand, and the fort appears out of it in the same colour as the ground.
Jaisalmer Fort is one of the few living forts left anywhere — people still live inside the walls, which is exactly what makes it feel different from Amber or Mehrangarh. Combined with Jodhpur on the way, six days makes a compact and genuinely striking trip.
We drive it all. Desert camps at Sam you book yourself; they range from basic tents to something close to luxury, and the difference is worth choosing for yourself.
More Rajasthan routes, from four days to the full desert circuit, are on our Rajasthan tours page.
Trip highlights
Jaisalmer Fort, still lived in, still the colour of the desert around it
Mehrangarh in Jodhpur — arguably the most impressive fort in India
The Sam dunes at sunset, an hour west of Jaisalmer
Patwon ki Haveli and the merchants' mansions of Jaisalmer's old town
Day-by-day itinerary
DAY01Day 1
Delhi to Jodhpur
A long driving day, roughly nine to ten hours with stops, or we can collect you from Jodhpur airport if you would rather fly this leg. Tell us and we will price it either way.
DAY02Day 2
Jodhpur — Mehrangarh and the old city
Mehrangarh Fort for the morning, Jaswant Thada, then down into the blue lanes below the fort and the Toorji stepwell. Clock tower market in the late afternoon.
DAY03Day 3
Jodhpur to Jaisalmer
About five and a half hours west. The landscape changes noticeably along the way. Arrive mid-afternoon with time for a first look at the fort as the light goes gold.
DAY04Day 4
Jaisalmer — the fort and the havelis
Inside the fort in the morning while it is cool, then Patwon ki Haveli, Salim Singh ki Haveli and Nathmal ki Haveli. Gadisar Lake in the evening.
DAY05Day 5
Jaisalmer to Sam dunes and back
A morning at Bada Bagh and the Kuldhara abandoned village, then out to the Sam dunes for the afternoon and sunset. We drive you back into Jaisalmer, or to your desert camp if you have booked one.
DAY06Day 6
Jaisalmer to Jodhpur or onward
Back east to Jodhpur for an onward flight or train, or we continue with you toward Udaipur or Delhi — tell us your plan and we will build the last day around it.

I travelled twice with Go India Nepal. In 2019 for 4 weeks with Babu, together with my 2 adult daughters, and in 2025 2 weeks with Suraj, together with my wife. Both trips were perfect !! Both are safe drivers, speak excellent English, and very respectful to their guests. Highly recommended.

It is a five and a half hour drive each way from Jodhpur, so it is a real commitment. Most people who make it say yes — it is a living fort in the middle of a desert and it looks like nowhere else in India. If you have fewer than six days, we would honestly point you at Jaipur and Jodhpur instead.
No — accommodation is never included in our road tours. Camps at Sam vary enormously, from very basic tents to properly comfortable ones, and the price range is wide. Choose the one you actually want and we will drive you there.
Many people do, and it saves a full day. Flights land at Jodhpur most days. We are happy to start the tour at Jodhpur airport, which turns this into a five-day trip. We can book the flight for you at cost or you can book it yourself.
It is a short ride on the dunes and it is very much a tourist activity — but the dunes at sunset are genuinely beautiful, camel or not. We will take you out there and you can decide at the dunes. It is paid separately either way.
Jaisalmer is desert. November to February is comfortable and the nights are cold. March and October are warm but fine. April to June regularly exceeds 43 degrees and we would not recommend the trip then.
Yes. The overnight train from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur or Delhi is a reasonable option and some travellers enjoy it. We will drop you at the station and, if you want, meet you at the other end.
