This is the classic north India cultural route, and it is a driving route — the roads from Agra down to Orchha and Khajuraho pass through country most visitors never see.
Khajuraho's temples are a thousand years old and carved from top to bottom; Orchha, two hours away, is a half-abandoned river town of cenotaphs and palaces that most itineraries skip entirely. Varanasi at the end is a different India again.
We drive Delhi to Khajuraho. The Khajuraho to Varanasi leg is long — around eleven hours — so we will discuss whether to drive it or put you on the train or a short flight, and we will give you our honest opinion rather than the one that suits us.
If you are weighing up routes, every India journey we run is listed on the India tours page, and the way our car-and-driver pricing works is explained on private car and driver in India.
Trip highlights
Khajuraho's Western Group of temples, carved in the tenth century
Orchha — cenotaphs on the Betwa river, and almost nobody there
Varanasi at dawn from a boat on the Ganges
The Taj Mahal at sunrise, on your own timing
Day-by-day itinerary
DAY01Day 1
Arrive Delhi
Airport pick-up and your hotel. An easy afternoon at Humayun's Tomb if you have the energy.
DAY02Day 2
Delhi sightseeing
Old Delhi and Chandni Chowk in the morning, New Delhi and Qutub Minar in the afternoon.
DAY03Day 3
Delhi to Agra
Three and a half hours. Taj Mahal in the afternoon, or we keep it for sunrise tomorrow.
DAY04Day 4
Agra to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri
Sunrise at the Taj if you prefer it, Agra Fort, then Fatehpur Sikri on the road. About six hours in total.
DAY05Day 5
Jaipur
Amber Fort early, City Palace and Jantar Mantar, then the bazaars.
DAY06Day 6
Jaipur to Orchha
A long driving day, roughly eight to nine hours, or we can put you on the train to Jhansi and meet you there. Arrive Orchha in the evening.
DAY07Day 7
Orchha to Khajuraho
A morning among the cenotaphs on the Betwa and the Jahangir Mahal, then about four hours to Khajuraho.
DAY08Day 8
Khajuraho
The Western Group in the morning when the light is best on the carving, the Eastern and Southern groups afterwards. The archaeological museum is worth an hour.
DAY09Day 9
Khajuraho to Varanasi
The honest options are an eleven-hour drive or a short flight. We will lay both out and you choose. If we drive, we leave early and stop properly.
DAY10Day 10
Varanasi and departure
A boat on the Ganges at dawn is the reason to be here. Then the old lanes and Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, before your flight out.

I travelled twice with Go India Nepal. In 2019 for 4 weeks with Babu, together with my 2 adult daughters, and in 2025 2 weeks with Suraj, together with my wife. Both trips were perfect !! Both are safe drivers, speak excellent English, and very respectful to their guests. Highly recommended.

Driving is about eleven hours on roads that are fine but slow. Flying takes a little over an hour and there are usually daily services. Most travellers fly this leg and we think that is the right call — we will still meet you in Varanasi with a car.
Because it is two hours from Khajuraho, almost nobody stops there, and the cenotaphs along the Betwa river at sunset are one of the quietest beautiful places in north India. It costs you half a day.
The temples are famous for erotic sculpture, though it is a small fraction of the total carving and it is high on the walls. Families visit constantly and it is rarely an issue. We mention it so you are not surprised.
It can be. The lanes are narrow, crowded, and there is a working cremation ground on the river. Many people find it the most memorable place they visit in India. Go with a boat at dawn and a slow pace, and it is far easier than arriving cold in the middle of the afternoon.
No. We are a driving company and take no commission on rooms. You book the hotels you want; we will book them at cost if you would rather not.
Budget roughly 70 to 90 US dollars per person over ten days for the Taj, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Amber, the Jaipur monuments and Khajuraho.
July to September is hot and wet and the Khajuraho and Orchha roads are less pleasant. October to March is the season. We drive it year-round if you need those dates, but we would tell you what to expect.
