Golden Triangle with Khajuraho and Varanasi: tour overview

This is the classic north India cultural route, and it is a driving route — the roads from Agra down to Orchha and Khajuraho pass through country most visitors never see.

Khajuraho's temples are a thousand years old and carved from top to bottom; Orchha, two hours away, is a half-abandoned river town of cenotaphs and palaces that most itineraries skip entirely. Varanasi at the end is a different India again.

We drive Delhi to Khajuraho. The Khajuraho to Varanasi leg is long — around eleven hours — so we will discuss whether to drive it or put you on the train or a short flight, and we will give you our honest opinion rather than the one that suits us.

If you are weighing up routes, every India journey we run is listed on the India tours page, and the way our car-and-driver pricing works is explained on private car and driver in India.

Golden Triangle with Khajuraho and Varanasi at a glance

  • Length: 10 days by private car, with the same English-speaking driver throughout.
  • Price: the Golden Triangle with Khajuraho and Varanasi tour starts from $890 for the whole car, not per person.
  • Route: Day 1 of the Golden Triangle with Khajuraho and Varanasi: Arrive in Delhi. Last day: Varanasi at dawn, Sarnath and departure.
  • Flexible: every day of the Golden Triangle with Khajuraho and Varanasi itinerary can be changed, shortened or extended.

Why add Khajuraho and Varanasi to the Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle shows you Mughal and Rajput India: the Taj Mahal, the forts and palaces of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. The Golden Triangle with Khajuraho and Varanasi adds two very different sides of the country. Khajuraho has the finest carved Hindu and Jain temples in India, built about a thousand years ago and listed by UNESCO. Varanasi, on the Ganges, is one of the oldest living cities in the world and the holiest place in Hinduism.

Ten days lets you do all of this without rushing. The route runs from Jaipur east to Orchha, a quiet riverside town of palaces and temples, then on to Khajuraho and Varanasi. We plan the long legs by car or train, whichever suits your dates best.

Who the Golden Triangle with Khajuraho and Varanasi suits

It suits first-time visitors with ten days who want to see more than the classic three cities, and travellers interested in religion, architecture and photography. Varanasi can be intense, with crowds, smoke from the cremation ghats and noise, so it suits people who enjoy a bit of chaos.

Highlights in Khajuraho and Varanasi

  • The Western Group of temples in Khajuraho, best in the soft light of late afternoon.
  • The evening Ganga aarti on the main ghat in Varanasi, with fire, bells and chanting.
  • A boat on the Ganges at sunrise, past the bathing ghats.
  • Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first teaching, a short drive from Varanasi.

Best time to travel

October to March is best. Varanasi is cold and often foggy early on winter mornings, and from April it gets very hot. Dev Deepawali in Varanasi, in November, lights the ghats with thousands of lamps.

Golden Triangle with Khajuraho and Varanasi: frequently asked questions

Real questions our travellers ask before they book, answered by the family who drives these routes.

Driving is about eleven hours on roads that are fine but slow. Flying takes a little over an hour and there are usually daily services. Most travellers fly this leg and we think that is the right call — we will still meet you in Varanasi with a car.

Because it is two hours from Khajuraho, almost nobody stops there, and the cenotaphs along the Betwa river at sunset are one of the quietest beautiful places in north India. It costs you half a day.

The temples are famous for erotic sculpture, though it is a small fraction of the total carving and it is high on the walls. Families visit constantly and it is rarely an issue. We mention it so you are not surprised.

It can be. The lanes are narrow, crowded, and there is a working cremation ground on the river. Many people find it the most memorable place they visit in India. Go with a boat at dawn and a slow pace, and it is far easier than arriving cold in the middle of the afternoon.

No. We are a driving company and take no commission on rooms. You book the hotels you want; we will book them at cost if you would rather not.

Budget roughly 70 to 90 US dollars per person over ten days for the Taj, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Amber, the Jaipur monuments and Khajuraho.

July to September is hot and wet and the Khajuraho and Orchha roads are less pleasant. October to March is the season. We drive it year-round if you need those dates, but we would tell you what to expect.
