Jaipur and Ranthambore: tour overview

If you have only a long weekend, this is the most rewarding way to spend it from Delhi. Jaipur gives you the forts and palaces. Ranthambore gives you jungle, ruined pavilions, lakes and, with luck, a tiger.

Ranthambore is one of the best parks in India for tiger sightings because its tigers are used to safari vehicles and the forest is open. Even without a tiger, the park is beautiful, with a thousand-year-old fort on the hill.

Safari permits sell out early in winter, so tell us your dates as soon as you can. More Rajasthan routes, from short first trips to the full desert circuit, are on our Rajasthan tours page.

Jaipur and Ranthambore itinerary, day by day

DAY01Day 1

Delhi to Jaipur · City Palace and Hawa Mahal

An easy first day on the new expressway, arriving in Jaipur in time for lunch and a gentle start to Rajasthan.

  • Morning: Pick-up from your Delhi hotel or the airport at about 8 a.m.
  • Drive: Delhi to Jaipur is about 270 km, 4½–5 hours with a tea stop.
  • Afternoon: After lunch, the City Palace and Jantar Mantar (until about 5 p.m.), then the Hawa Mahal from the rooftop café opposite, and the bazaars at dusk.
  • Tickets: Nahargarh Fort about ₹200 (approx. 2026 prices for foreign visitors; Indian citizens pay much less). City Palace about ₹700 if visited today.
  • Eat: Lunch at Laxmi Mishthan Bhandar (LMB) in Johari Bazaar, a Jaipur institution for generations, or Rawat for the famous pyaaz kachori.
  • Tip: Jaipur's old city is walled and pink by law. Your driver knows where to park, so you never have to walk far in the heat.
  • Overnight: Jaipur
DAY02Day 2

Amber Fort, then Jaipur to Ranthambore · afternoon safari

Jaipur's great hill fort first thing, then south to tiger country in time for your first safari.

  • 8:00 a.m.: Amber Fort at opening, about 2 hours.
  • Drive: Jaipur to Ranthambore (Sawai Madhopur) is about 160 km, 3–3½ hours. Leave by 10:30 a.m.

  • Evening: Dinner at your lodge.
  • Tickets: Safari permits are sold online by the Rajasthan Forest Department and sell out weeks ahead in peak season. We book them as soon as you confirm, using your passport details. Expect roughly ₹2,000–3,000 per person per safari in a shared Gypsy for foreign visitors.
  • Tip: Wear neutral colours, bring a warm layer (mornings are cold in winter), a hat, sunscreen and a scarf for the dust.
  • Overnight: Ranthambore
DAY03Day 3

A dawn safari when tigers are most active, then a 10th-century fort inside the park.
