Delhi to Jaipur by Car: How Long It Actually Takes

Home/ Journal/ Delhi to Jaipur by Car: How Long It Actually Takes

Maps will tell you four and a half hours. Plan for six. Here is why, and how to make the day a good one rather than a lost one.

The honest number

Delhi to Jaipur is 270 kilometres on NH48. Door to door it takes five and a half to six hours including one stop. Leaving central Delhi at eight in the morning puts you in Jaipur around two in the afternoon.

The highway itself is good. What costs you the time is Delhi.

Where the hours actually go

Getting out of Delhi: 60 to 90 minutes. From central Delhi to the Gurugram toll on a weekday morning can take an hour and a half on its own. This is the biggest variable and the reason we leave early.

NH48 to Behror: about two hours. Fast, dual carriageway, easy driving.

The stop: 30 to 40 minutes, usually around Behror or Shahpura, roughly halfway, where there are clean highway restaurants with proper toilets.

Behror to Jaipur: about two hours, then twenty to thirty minutes inside Jaipur depending on where you are staying.

What makes it slower

Leaving after nine. You lose an hour to Delhi traffic that a half past seven departure avoids entirely.

Friday and Sunday evenings, when Delhi to Jaipur weekend traffic is heavy in both directions.

Fog in December and January. North Indian winter fog can be severe, visibility drops to a few metres, and the honest advice is that the road becomes dangerous. We delay departures rather than drive through it.

Monsoon, July to September. Standing water and slower traffic, though NH48 drains reasonably well.

What to do with the day instead of just driving it

Neemrana Fort sits about 120 kilometres out, a fifteenth-century fort turned hotel on a hillside. Lunch there turns the drive into part of the trip and adds about ninety minutes.

Samode, 40 kilometres short of Jaipur, is a quieter alternative first night if you would rather not arrive straight into a city.

Chand Baori at Abhaneri is better placed on the Agra to Jaipur leg, but worth knowing about: 3,500 steps descending into the ground, and almost nobody there.

Should you take the train instead?

The Shatabdi Express does Delhi to Jaipur in about four and a half hours and is comfortable. It is a real option if Jaipur is your only stop.

It stops making sense the moment you want to continue to Agra, Pushkar or Jodhpur, or to stop anywhere in between. Rajasthan’s best parts are not near stations. That is the whole argument for the car.

What it costs

As a one-way transfer with a private car and driver, Delhi to Jaipur is a single day at our normal rate: USD 49 per person for two travellers, covering the car, the driver, fuel, tolls and the Rajasthan state entry tax.

Most people do it as day two of a longer route. Our car and driver page lists every rate, and the Rajasthan routes carry on from Jaipur into Jodhpur, Udaipur and the desert.

Doing this drive?

We run it most weeks. Send your date and how many of you there are, and we will come back with the car, the driver and one price for the day.
