Buland Darwaza gateway of Fatehpur Sikri near Agra on a golden triangle 6 days tour

By Khem “Babu” Khadaka, founder, driving these roads since 1996 · Last updated: 2027 season (October 2026 – June 2027)

A golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary is the version we recommend to most first-time visitors, because it’s the shortest plan that leaves room to enjoy India rather than just tick it off.

Six days gives you two nights in Delhi to shake off the flight, a night in Agra with the Taj Mahal at sunset from across the river and again at sunrise the next morning, a proper stop at Fatehpur Sikri, and two nights in Jaipur.

It also gives you afternoons. A rest by the hotel pool after Agra Fort, an unhurried lunch in Jaipur, time to wander a bazaar without watching the clock. Those gaps are what make a trip feel like a holiday.

So instead of asking only “What can I fit into six days?”, it helps to ask a better question:

How do I use six days so that every morning has a highlight and every afternoon has room to breathe?

That’s how this guide is laid out. It gives our relaxed day-by-day plan for a golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary, the Fatehpur Sikri and Abhaneri stepwell options on the way to Jaipur, the best places to see the Taj at sunrise and sunset, a realistic picture of the pace, the start days to avoid, and what the trip costs with our car and driver.

Quick answer: Sleep 2 nights in Delhi, 1 in Agra and 2 in Jaipur. See the Taj from Mehtab Bagh at sunset on Day 3 and inside at sunrise on Day 4, then stop at Fatehpur Sikri (or the Chand Baori stepwell) on the way to Jaipur. Don’t start on a Tuesday, or your Taj morning lands on a Friday. Our private car and driver costs USD 534 for 1 to 3 travellers, for the whole vehicle.

In This Guide

1. Why a Golden Triangle Tour 6 Days Itinerary Is the Sweet Spot

We plan Golden Triangle trips from three days to three weeks, and six days is where the curve flattens. Below it, you’re cutting sights. Above it, you’re adding new places rather than improving the three cities.

  • Jet lag gets a day. Long-haul flights into Delhi often land at night. Day 1 is deliberately light.
  • Agra gets two looks at the Taj. Sunset from the far bank, then sunrise inside the gates.
  • Fatehpur Sikri gets time. Two unhurried hours with a guide instead of a rushed photo stop.
  • Jaipur gets two nights. A full sightseeing day and a slow last morning, so the long drive back doesn’t follow a packed day.
  • Daily driving stays under five hours. No day asks you to sightsee hard and drive far.

If you have only four days, our 4-day golden triangle plan shows what to cut. If you’re still deciding on length, our how many days for the Golden Triangle guide compares every option.

2. The Golden Triangle Tour 6 Days Itinerary at a Glance

Here’s the shape of the trip, clockwise from Delhi:

5JaipurCity onlyAmber Fort, Jal Mahal, City Palace, Hawa MahalJaipur
6Jaipur → DelhiAbout 280 km, 4–6 hSlow morning, bazaars; drive to DelhiFlight or hotel

That’s five nights and about 750 km in all, with three driving days and three days on foot. Our Golden Triangle Tour 6 Days follows this outline, and we adjust it to your flights and your start day.

3. Day 1: Arrive in Delhi and Take It Easy

A golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary starts slowly. Our driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board and takes you to your hotel. Whatever time you land, the plan for Day 1 is the same: sleep, eat, and do one gentle thing late in the day.

If you’re up to it, go to the Lodhi Garden, a park full of 15th and 16th-century tombs where Delhi’s residents walk in the evening. Or drive down Kartavya Path to India Gate as the lights come on. Both are free.

Resist the urge to do more. Delhi’s traffic and noise are a lot on a first day, and a rested Day 2 will get far more from Old Delhi.

4. Day 2: Old Delhi, Humayun’s Tomb and the Qutub Minar

Now you’re fresh, so Day 2 is the fullest Delhi day of the golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary. We start in the old city while it’s waking up.

Humayun's Tomb in Delhi reflected in a garden water channel at sunrise
Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi
  • Red Fort (from 9:30 a.m.): Shah Jahan’s palace-fortress, the seat of Mughal power once the capital moved from Agra. Closed on Mondays.
  • Chandni Chowk by cycle-rickshaw: the old imperial avenue and its lanes of silver, spices and wedding saris. Ask to see the Khari Baoli spice market.
  • Jama Masjid: India’s largest mosque, free to enter; there’s a camera fee, and robes are lent to anyone not covered.
  • Lunch, then a break in the hottest part of the day.
  • Humayun’s Tomb (mid-afternoon): the garden tomb that inspired the Taj Mahal, lovely in the late light.
  • Qutub Minar (late afternoon): the 12th-century tower and the ruins around it glow at the end of the day.

Humayun’s Tomb, the Qutub Minar and the Red Fort each cost ₹600 for foreigners at the counter, or ₹550 online. A local guide for Old Delhi is money well spent, because the lanes are a maze and the stories are the point. Read guide or driver for how we arrange one.

5. Day 3: Delhi to Agra, Agra Fort and Sunset at Mehtab Bagh

On a golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary there’s no need for a dawn start today. A relaxed 8:30 a.m. departure gets you down the Yamuna Expressway to Agra before lunch. Check in first, so the afternoon is yours.

Agra Fort

The fort is where the Mughal story of Agra makes sense. Akbar rebuilt it in red sandstone; Shah Jahan added white marble palaces; and Shah Jahan ended his life imprisoned here by his son, with a view of his wife’s tomb. It costs ₹650 for foreigners and is open every day. Allow 90 minutes to two hours.

Itimad-ud-Daulah, the ‘Baby Taj’

Across the river, this small tomb is covered in pietra dura inlay that came before the Taj. It’s quiet, and it takes 45 minutes. On a six-day plan there’s time for it; on four days there usually isn’t.

Mehtab Bagh at sunset

Mehtab Bagh is a Mughal garden laid out directly opposite the Taj on the far bank of the Yamuna. At sunset the marble turns gold and the reflection sits in the river below. It costs ₹300 for foreigners, it’s open every day, and it’s the best way to see the Taj on a Friday.

6. Day 4: Taj Mahal at Sunrise and the Road to Jaipur

Day 4 is the highlight of the golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary. The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise. Be at the gate early with your ticket bought online: ₹1,100 for foreigners, plus ₹200 to enter the main mausoleum. Spend two unhurried hours inside, then go back for breakfast.

Leave Agra at about 10 a.m. The road to Jaipur passes Fatehpur Sikri after about 40 km. We allow two to two and a half hours there with a licensed guide, then lunch, then the drive on to Jaipur.

You’ll reach Jaipur at around 5 p.m., in time for a walk or a rooftop dinner. If you’d rather see the Chand Baori stepwell than Fatehpur Sikri, section 9 explains the trade-off.

7. Day 5: Amber Fort, Jal Mahal and the Pink City

Day 5 is Jaipur’s big day, and the reason a golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary has two nights here. We start early at Amber, because the fort is at its best, and its emptiest, in the first hour.

Jal Mahal water palace floating in Man Sagar lake in Jaipur at dusk, with the Aravalli hills behind

Jal Mahal sits in Man Sagar lake on the road to Amber. A golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary leaves time to come back for dusk.
  • Amber Fort (from about 8 a.m.): the palace of the Kachhwaha kings, with the Sheesh Mahal mirror hall and views over the old walls. ₹1,000 for foreigners since January 2026.
  • Panna Meena ka Kund: a small, geometric stepwell a few minutes’ walk from Amber, free to visit.
  • Jal Mahal: the water palace in Man Sagar lake. It isn’t open to visitors, so it’s a photo stop from the lakeside promenade.
  • City Palace and Jantar Mantar (late morning): the royal palace, still partly home to the former royal family, and the giant stone observatory next door.
  • Lunch and a rest, then Hawa Mahal in the afternoon.
  • Nahargarh Fort at sunset, high on the ridge above the city.

Jaipur’s state-run monuments raised their foreigner fees on 1 January 2026. The composite ticket, about ₹1,700, covers one entry each to Amber, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Nahargarh, Albert Hall and several smaller sites, and it’s the better deal for this day. The City Palace is private and sells its own ticket (see the City Palace visitor page).

8. Day 6: A Slow Jaipur Morning and the Drive to Delhi

The last day of the golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary is deliberately unhurried. You’ve seen the big sights, so this morning is for whatever you enjoyed most, or missed.

  • The Albert Hall Museum, in a grand Indo-Saracenic building, covered by the composite ticket.
  • Patrika Gate at Jawahar Circle, a painted gateway that’s free and very photogenic.
  • Johari and Bapu Bazaars for block-printed cotton, jewellery and mojari slippers.
  • The Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing near Amber, for anyone who loves textiles.

Leave Jaipur after lunch. Since July 2025 a new link from Jaipur’s Ring Road joins the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, which makes the run to Delhi faster than it used to be, but allow four to six hours to your hotel or the airport. For the road itself, see our Delhi to Jaipur by car guide.

9. Fatehpur Sikri or the Chand Baori Stepwell?

On Day 4 of a golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary you can choose between two very different stops on the road to Jaipur, or, with an early start, do both.

Fatehpur Sikri is the one we’d choose if you can only pick one. The capital was used for barely a decade before the court moved on in 1585, so it survives almost intact. The UNESCO listing for Fatehpur Sikri calls the Buland Darwaza one of the finest buildings of Akbar’s reign.

Chand Baori has about 3,500 narrow steps in a zig-zag pattern down roughly 30 metres. You can’t walk down, but the view from the gallery is extraordinary. Next door is the partly ruined Harshat Mata temple.

Doing both is possible on a golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary if you leave the Taj by 8:30 a.m. You’ll arrive in Jaipur around 6 p.m., tired but happy.

10. How the Pace Feels, Day by Day

People worry that a road trip means living in the car. Here’s what a golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary really asks of you:

DayTime in the carSightseeing on footFree time
1Under 1 hour1 hour, optionalMost of the day
2About 2 hours of city driving5–6 hoursA midday break
33–4 hours3–4 hoursAn afternoon rest
44–5 hours4–5 hoursThe evening
5About 1.5 hours in town5–6 hoursA long lunch break
64–6 hours2–3 hoursThe morning is flexible

The long drives fall on Days 3, 4 and 6, and none of them follows an early start and a full day of sightseeing. Your driver stops whenever you want, for tea, toilets or photos, and the car is air-conditioned.

For the same reason, a golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary is the plan we recommend for families with children and for older travellers. The pace is steady, not exhausting.

11. Seeing the Taj Mahal Well: Sunrise, Sunset and Where to Sit

Because a golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary gives you two visits, it’s worth knowing how to use each one.

A woman traveller relaxing on the lawn in the gardens in front of the Taj Mahal, Agra

On a golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary there’s time to sit in the Taj gardens, not just take photographs.
  • First view: walk slowly through the great red gateway. The Taj is framed in the arch, and it’s the moment most people remember.
  • The famous bench: the platform halfway down the water channel is where the classic photos are taken. At sunrise there’s hardly a queue.
  • The side lawns: the gardens either side of the channel are the place to sit and simply watch the colour change.
  • The riverside terrace: behind the mausoleum, looking across the Yamuna to Mehtab Bagh, where you stood the evening before.
  • The mosque: the red sandstone mosque on the west side is quieter, and its arches frame the Taj beautifully.

Photography is allowed in the gardens but not inside the mausoleum. Leave tripods, drones and food at the hotel, and keep bags small. A standard ticket is valid for a visit of up to three hours.

Night viewing is also possible on the full-moon night and two nights either side, except Fridays and during Ramzan. Tickets are sold in Agra, usually a day ahead, so it only fits if your Agra night happens to match. The Agra district’s Taj Mahal page has the current rules.

12. Start Days, Variations and Add-Ons

Start days to avoid

If you start on…The problemThe fix
TuesdayDay 4, your Taj sunrise, is a FridayGo into the Taj at sunset on Day 3 instead of Mehtab Bagh, or reverse the loop
SundayDay 2, your Old Delhi day, is a Monday: Red Fort closedSwap in Humayun’s Tomb and the Qutub Minar first, or see the fort from outside

Every other start day works as shown for a golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary. We check this when we plan your dates.

Other ways to run six days

  • Reverse the loop (Delhi → Jaipur → Agra → Delhi) to finish with the Taj and a short, predictable drive to Delhi.
  • Start in Jaipur if you’re flying in from the Gulf or elsewhere in India; Jaipur has its own airport.
  • Swap Delhi’s second night for Agra if you’ve seen Delhi before and want a slower Agra.

Stretching to 7 to 10 days

The easiest upgrade is tigers: our 8-day Golden Triangle with Ranthambore tiger safari adds two nights in Ranthambore, about 160 km from Jaipur. The 10-day tour with Khajuraho and Varanasi adds temples and the Ganges. Our Ranthambore guide explains safari zones and seasons.

13. What the 6-Day Tour Costs

Our Golden Triangle Tour 6 Days is fully private and priced per vehicle, so a family of five pays the same as a couple in an SUV-sized car:

White MPV with private driver on a Rajasthan highway through desert scrub
Private Car and Driver on a Rajasthan Highway
Travelling asVehiclePrice for 6 daysPer day
1 to 3 travellersSedanUSD 534USD 89
4 to 5 travellersSUV (Toyota Innova Crysta type)USD 732USD 122
6 to 8 travellersTempo TravellerUSD 960USD 160
  • Included: the car and an English-speaking driver for all six days, airport pick-up and drop, fuel, tolls, parking, state taxes and the driver’s own food and lodging.
  • Not included: hotels, meals, monument tickets and local guides. Entry fees for this plan come to roughly ₹8,000–8,500 per adult (about USD 95–100) with the Jaipur composite ticket.

Compared with the 4-day tour at USD 356, the two extra days cost USD 178 for a sedan, and they buy a rest day in Delhi, a second look at the Taj and a second night in Jaipur. The 7-day classic tour costs USD 623.

For how Indian car hire is usually priced, see car and driver costs in India. Tipping is always optional; our tipping guide gives fair amounts.

Your Planning Checklist

Run your plan through these eight questions before you book:

  1. Is my Day 1 light, with no sightseeing before I’ve slept?
  2. Does my Taj sunrise fall on any day except a Friday?
  3. Is my Old Delhi day any day except a Monday, if I want to go inside the Red Fort?
  4. Am I at Mehtab Bagh for sunset on the evening before the Taj?
  5. Have I chosen between Fatehpur Sikri and Chand Baori, or allowed time for both?
  6. Is Amber Fort first thing on my Jaipur day?
  7. Does my flight home leave late enough for the drive from Jaipur?
  8. Have I budgeted for entry fees, including Jaipur’s 2026 increases?

If most answers are yes, your six days will feel like a holiday rather than a race.

Summary: A Simple Way to Think About It

Think of a golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary as three pairs. Two days for Delhi, one to arrive and one to explore. Two looks at the Taj, sunset and sunrise. Two nights in Jaipur, one busy day and one slow morning.

Everything else is detail. Keep the pairs, start on the right day, and the golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary does the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 6 days enough for the Golden Triangle?

Yes. A golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary is the ideal length for most first visits. It gives two nights in Delhi, one in Agra and two in Jaipur, with the Taj at sunset and sunrise, a proper stop at Fatehpur Sikri and free time most afternoons.

What is the best 6-day golden triangle itinerary?

Day 1 arrive Delhi, Day 2 Old and New Delhi, Day 3 drive to Agra for Agra Fort and a Mehtab Bagh sunset, Day 4 Taj sunrise and Fatehpur Sikri on the way to Jaipur, Day 5 Jaipur sightseeing, Day 6 a slow morning and the drive back to Delhi.

How much does a golden triangle tour 6 days cost?

Our private tour costs USD 534 for a sedan (1 to 3 travellers), USD 732 for an SUV (4 to 5) and USD 960 for a Tempo Traveller (6 to 8). That’s for the whole vehicle with fuel, tolls, parking, taxes and the driver. Hotels, meals and entry fees are extra.

Which day should I not start a 6-day golden triangle tour?

Tuesday, on the usual clockwise route, because your Taj sunrise on Day 4 would be a Friday, when the Taj Mahal is closed. A Sunday start puts your Old Delhi day on a Monday, when the Red Fort is closed.

Is Fatehpur Sikri worth visiting?

Yes. Akbar’s capital was used for only about a decade, so it survives almost intact, and it lies 40 km from Agra on the Jaipur road. Allow two hours with a guide. Foreigners pay ₹600, or ₹550 online.

What is the Chand Baori stepwell and is it worth the detour?

Chand Baori at Abhaneri is a 13-level stepwell with about 3,500 steps, around 30 metres deep. It’s about 95 km before Jaipur and adds roughly an hour of driving plus up to an hour on site. It’s worth it for photographers.

Where is the best place to see the Taj Mahal at sunset?

Mehtab Bagh, the Mughal garden across the Yamuna directly opposite the Taj. It costs ₹300 for foreigners, is open every day including Fridays, and is far quieter than the Taj itself at sunset.

What time does the Taj Mahal open for sunrise?

The Taj opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, every day except Friday. In winter that means gates open at roughly 6:15 to 6:45 a.m. Arrive a little early with an online ticket.

How many nights should I spend in Jaipur?

Two nights, if you can. That gives one full day for Amber Fort, the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal, a sunset at Nahargarh Fort, and a slow final morning before the drive to Delhi.

Can I see Jal Mahal inside?

No, Jal Mahal in Man Sagar lake isn’t open to visitors. You see it from the lakeside promenade on the road to Amber Fort, and it’s most beautiful at dusk.

How long are the drives on a golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary?

Delhi to Agra is about 230 km and 3 to 4 hours, Agra to Jaipur about 240 km and 4 to 5 hours, and Jaipur to Delhi about 280 km and 4 to 6 hours. The other three days involve only city driving.

Is a 6-day golden triangle tour good for families?

Yes. On a golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary, no day combines a very early start, a long drive and a full day of sightseeing, and there are free afternoons for rest. An SUV for 4 to 5 travellers costs USD 732 for the whole trip.

How much are entry fees on the 6-day tour?

Roughly ₹8,000 to ₹8,500 per adult, about USD 95 to 100, using the Jaipur composite ticket. Children under 15 go free at Archaeological Survey of India monuments such as the Taj and Fatehpur Sikri.

Can I add Ranthambore to a 6-day golden triangle tour?

Yes, it becomes an 8-day tour with two nights in Ranthambore, about 160 km from Jaipur. Our 8-day Golden Triangle with Ranthambore tiger safari costs USD 712 for a sedan. The park’s safari season runs from 1 October to 30 June.

Is this 6-day golden triangle guide up to date for 2027?

Yes. It’s written for the October 2026 to June 2027 season, including Jaipur’s January 2026 fee increases and the new Jaipur link to the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway. Fees and timings do change, so check them before you go.

Before You Go

Six days is enough to see the Golden Triangle properly and still come home rested. The trick is to protect the quiet parts of the plan as carefully as the famous ones.

A light first day. Sunset and sunrise at the Taj. Fatehpur Sikri with a guide. Amber Fort early. A slow last morning in Jaipur.

Plan around those, and a golden triangle tour 6 days itinerary is simple. For the bigger picture, read our complete golden triangle tour guide, our Delhi to Agra by car guide, or the Rajasthan itinerary guide if you’re tempted to go further.
